2009 College Football Odds: Head Coach Jim Harbaugh certainly appears to have the Cardinal program headed in the right direction after just two years at the school. Harbaugh has compiled a 9-15 record, but Stanford had won just 16 games in the five seasons prior to the former quarterback's arrival. Last year the Cardinal finished with a 5-7 overall record while going 4-5 in Pac-10 action. Despite the apparant turnaround, the Cardinal are still viewed as a +2200 longshot to win the conference in SBGglobal.com's Stanford Cardinal 2009 College Football Odds. Stanford fielded its best offense in years in 2008, averaging 26.3 Gerhart powered the team to an average of 200 rushing yards per game (4.9 yards per carry) while recording a Cardinal single season record 1136 yards on the ground. The senior rusher, who is also a standout baseball player, added 15 touchdowns as well. Last season's quarterback, Tavita Pritchard, returns too, but his job may go to highly touted redshirt freshman Andrew Luck. Pritchard threw for just 1633 yards a season ago and he had more interceptions than touchdowns (13 to 10). The Cardinal defense gave up 27.4 points per game last year, making it the weaker half of the team. The unit stands to improve this season with eight starters returning, including top tackler Bo McNally (FS) and leading sacker Tom Keiser (DE). McNally recorded 76 tackles, two sacks, and four interceptions for co-defensive coordinators Ron Lynn and Andy Buh. Keiser, meanwhile, earned first team Freshman All American honors after tallying 24 tackles and six sacks in 2008. Stanford begins conference play straight away this season with a game at Washington State on September 5th. The Cardinal non-conference schedule features games against Wake Forest, San Jose State, and Notre Dame.
