USC Trojans - Pac-10 PreviewThe USC Trojans are everybodies darling to take home the National Championship in 2007. But as Lees Corso loves to say “not so fast my friend.” Without question the Trojans are loaded on both sides of the ball and head coach Pete Carroll has been loading up on recruits. The Trojans lost two of Heisman hopeful John David Booty’s top targets to the NFL and All-American kicker Mario Danelo fell to his death since last years “rebuilding season”. There are legit questions but heading into the season USC seems to have all the answers.

Bodog.com has the USC Trojans with 5 to 2 betting odds to Win the 2008 BCS Championship

USC run a Pro-style balanced offense with lots of options at their disposal. The way USC has been pumping out NFL caliber Quarterbacks you might as well them the school for passers. John David Booty, 6-3 210, is the latest ace with his skill set of good feet, smarts and accuracy. In all honesty I would have to rate departed Matt Leinart a level higher, but Booty is still damn good. The Trojans have a nice problem at running back: they have 10 capable players. Unfathomable is the fact that USC only managed to average only 127 yards per game last season on the ground. Look for the tribe of blue-chip ballers to average in the 170+ yards per game range this year. There are some blazing fast athletes at receiver but none are proven outside of strong Junior wideout Patrick Turner, 6-5 230.  Future NFL first round Left tackle Sam Baker , 6-5 305, anchors a nasty Trojan line that should provide great protection and gaping holes.

As good as the offense is the defense is better. The Trojans run out of a 4-3. DT Sedrick Ellis, 6-1 295, leads the men up front with his ability to stuff runners through the turf. All-American Senior DE Lawerence Jackson , 6-5 270, can fly off the corner with his 20 career sacks. The best part of this defense are their linebackers. All three starting linebackers Rey Maualuga, 6-3 250, Keith Rivers, 6-3 235, and Brian Cushing, 6-4 240, will be first day NFL draft picks next season. Maualuga is an especially scary hitter that can knock running backs teeth out. Shutdown cornerback Terrell Thomas, 6-1 200, will be complemented by one of the best safety duo’s in the nation. The secondary has lots of depth with plenty of players to interchange. The special teams look ver good all the way around except for the glaring question mark at kicker. David Buehler is the replacement and has a strong leg but he is unproven.

This is the team to beat with 18 returning starters from an 11-2 team. Pete Carroll has all the pieces in place and the USC Trojans play a schedule that should see them to a BCS bowl.
