2009 College Football Odds: Rick Neuheisel took over the UCLA football program last year but he inherited little in the way of starting talent or depth. The Bruins finished the season with a 4-8 record and a 3-6 tally in conference play. The sub .500 mark, which resulted in a ninth place Pac-10 finish, was the worst of the decade for UCLA. Neuheisel should have more to work with this year and Sportsbetting.com's UCLA Bruins 2009 College Football Odds reflects that. The team's regular season win total is set at 6 with the over drawing -180 on the moneyline. UCLA's offense was nothing short of dreadful last season, producing Kevin Craft helmed the quarterback position after Patrick Cowan went down with a knee injury and the results were less than stellar. Craft threw for 2341 yards, seven touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. Taking over for Craft is red shirt freshman Kevin Prince and, despite the lack of experience, the quarterback play should improve. The team's leading rusher, Kahlil Bell, had just 397 yards while averaging 2.8 per carry in 2008. He will be replaced by sophomore Derrick Coleman, who ran for 284 (5,4 yards per carry) a season ago. The top two receivers, Taylor Embree and Terrence Austin, are back as is tight end Ryan Mota. The offensive line's pedestrian play led to some awful numbers last year. The returning experience coupled with some transfer additions will equate to vast improvement upfront. Neuheisel's defense lacked punch as well, but the Bruins' point per game allowed average of 29 was partially inflated due to the number of scores coming as a result of turnover. There is certainly promise with this year's unit, despite the loss of defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker. New coordinator Chuck Bullough, who has been the linebackers coach at UCLA for the past three seasons, has seven returning starters. The defensive line will be particularly strong with first and second team All Pac-10 performers Brian Price and Korey Bosworth back in the fold. Bosworth led the team with 7.5 sacks while Price had 35 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 9.5 tackles for loss. Top linebacker Reggie Carter, who lassoed a team leading 83 tackles a season ago, is back to lead the second level of the defense. Senior cornerback Alterraun Verner will anchor an otherwise young secondary. Verner recorded 73 tackles, 18 pass deflections, and two picks in a standout junior season. UCLA opens play with a home game against San Diego State on September 5th. The Bruins also have non-conference tilts versus Tennessee and Kansas State before their first conference game on October 3rd at Stanford. a miserable 17.7 points per game. The team also averaged a meager 283 yards per contest, gave up 35 sacks, and ran for 2.6 yards per carry.
