Another Hawkins era begins on Saturday (12:05 pm ET, FSN) for the University of Colorado Buffaloes football team and we aren’t talking about the head football coach. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Cody Hawkins, second year coach Dan Hawkins’ son, will be starting under center when the Buffaloes play in state arch-rival, Colorado State University at Invesco Field in Denver. This game is so big inside the Colorado borders; it has a sponsor and a slogan, the Qwest Rocky Mountain Showdown.
The coaching mantra says to take it one game at a time and that no one game is more important than the other. But this Saturday’s contest in the Qwest Rocky Mountain Showdown will hold a greater significance than most games for a number of reasons.
You’ve got so many things,” Hawkins [the coach] said. “You’ve got the first game, which I think is huge, no matter who you play; you’ve got your rival; you’ve got a team coming off a season like we came off of. There are a lot of factors that go into saying ‘You guys better have your horns out and be ready to go here.’”
Colorado State head coach Sonny Lubick pretty much agrees with Hawkins assessment. "I think that over the past few years, a lot of hype has been written about it,” Lubick said. “From the coaches' standpoint, there's no sense in giving a fiery speech today. But the players know the significance of the game. It's the first game, compounded with CU, down in Invesco Field, 70,000 or more people each time we play.
Oddsmakers at online sports betting giant Sportsbook.com give a slight edge to CU having it installed as a -2.5-point favorite against the spread while money line and totals have not been released. Betting trends show 53 percent of the early money finding its way to the Rams.
