Ohio State Buckeyes – Big 10 Preview

Ohio State Buckeyes - Big 10 PreviewOne year after getting smashed in the BCS. Championship game to the Florida Gators the Ohio State Buckeyes are reloading once again after losing 11 starters. With the returning Quarterbacks having totaled 11 collegiate passes combined it will be interesting to see who emerges as a leader on head coach Jim Tressel’s team. Bodog has made the Ohio State Buckeyes 28 to 1 betting odds to win the 2008 BCS National Championship.

The Buckeyes will be a between the tackles running team this year. No team in college football lost more of their offensive arsenal than the Buckeyes. The new QB will be either junior Todd Boeckman, 6-5 235, or sophomore Robbie Schoenhoft. Both of these guys are big, smart and strong armed play callers that should be a capable replacement to last year’s Heisman winner QB Troy Smith.

The running game will have a bruiser in Chris Wells, 6-1 232, and a scatback in Maurice Wells, 5-10, 190. Chris has power and speed but has had some fumbling issues. Both Well’s will have the privilege of running behind a massive line led by All-American RT Kirk Barton, 6-6 310. The wideouts have some unproven talent. #1 target WR Brian Robiskie, 6-3 195 is a tough rangy player that has some polish. #2 WR Ray Small is an electric Ted Ginn Jr. type with 4.4 speed.

The Buckeyes aren’t a flashy defensive team but they run a 4-3 that has some wrinkles that keep opposing Quarterbacks guessing. Up front Ohio State has some questions. One area that looks strong though is Defensive End with disruptive future NFL player Vernon Gholston, 6-4 260. Inside there is a potential run stuffing playmaker in athletic DT Doug Worthington, 6-7 275.

The linebacking unit is fast and nasty. All-American Middle linebacker James Laurinatis, 6-3 244, leads the deep core of backers. In the secondary has size and athleticism. CB Malcom Jenkins, 6-0 202, is a lockdown corner that frees up the playmaking safeties.
Punter A.J Trapasso can blast punts and change games with field position. Kicker Aaron Pettrey is a consistent player and all of the coverage and return units have speed.
Ohio State could just surprise everyone in the Big 10 and walk away with the title. While the personnel losses will be difficult to overcome, this squad has plenty of talent and should be a sleeper team that comes up with 10 wins.
