The No.9 (AP)Virginia Tech Hokies host the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday to open the season for both schools at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virg., in an ABC regionally televised game beginning at Noon ET. Virginia Tech should be a force this season, and with the tragedy of last Spring behind them things can only get better for the 10-3 team of a year ago. Junior QB Sean Glennon returns as the Hokies starter this year after starting all 13 games in 2006. Glennon completed 170-of-302 passes for 2,191 yards and 11 touchdowns, including a 339 yard game against Georgia Tech in which he attempted a school-record tying 53 passes. Junior Brandon Ore returns as the stallion in the backfield. Last year, he rushed for 1,137 yards, scored 17 total TDs, broke 91 tackles, led the ACC in all-purpose yards (112.6 ypg) and scoring (8.5 ppg) and was second in rushing (94.8 ypg). The Pirates, who posted their first winning season since 2000 last year, will open the new year looking to take another large step forward in their rebuilding process under the direction of third-year head coach Skip Holtz. Sophomore QB Rob Kass is suspended for Saturday's opener for a violation of team policy according to an Aug. 27 announcement from head coach SkipHoltz ... Kass, who was expected to make his first collegiate start against theHokies, experienced action in five games as a redshirt freshman in ‘06 and completed 14-of-30 passes for 184 yards ... Kass had earned the early nodas the Pirates' starter at the conclusion of spring drills. There could be as many as seven first-time starters in East Carolina’s lineup against Virginia Tech Saturday. Offensively, OG Doug Palmer, OT D.J. Scott, WR Jamar Bryant, QB Brett Clay/Patrick Pinkney and RB Dominique Lindsay are slated to get their first starts against the Hokies. For all practical purposes, C Fred Hicks should be included in that group but he does have three prior starts (as a defensive tackle in ‘04 and ‘05) ... On the defensive side of the ball, there might be at least two new faces awaiting Virginia Tech’s first snap, FS Chris Mattocks and CB Jerek Hewett.
