The No. 3 (AP) West Virginia Mountaineers will travel across the state on Saturday to play the Marshall University Thundering Herd in an 11 a.m. ET nationally televised (ESPN2) game at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington WV.
Oddsmakers at online sportsbook Sportsbetting.com have installed the Mountaineers as a -24 double-digit road favorite with a 62 total. At the time of publishing, money line prices were not available.
West Virginia opened the 2007 season with a convincing 62-24 SU victory over Western Michigan easily covering the -25 point line ATS. Behind 289 yards of total offense from quarterback Patrick White and 170 yards of total offense from Heisman Trophy candidate tailback Steve Slaton, the Mountaineers scored their most points in a season opener since 1988 and the two combined for eight touchdowns.
Marshall opened its 2007 season last Saturday with a 31-3 SU loss to Miami (Fla.) in Orange Bowl Stadium. In the 28 point loss, Marshall fell way short of covering +18 ½ as a road underdog. The Thundering Herd hung tough with the Hurricanes for much of the contest, however untimely penalties and turnovers proved costly. The Thundering Herd did limit Miami to only one scoring drive of more than 50 yards. In fact, all but 10 of Miami's points came from short field opportunities created by turnovers. Receivers Courtney Edmonson and Darius Passmore led the way for combining to catch five passes for 100 yards. True freshman running back Darius Marshall also caught five balls against the Hurricanes. The key to Marshall’s offense is quarterback Bernie Morris. The senior from Orlando, Fla., was 16 of 26 for 162 yards and three interceptions against the Hurricanes.
