Texas Longhorns 2009 College Football Predictions: After missing out on a chance to win the BCS title a year ago, the University of Texas Longhornns will surely be playing the 2009 season with special motivation as they will want to leave no doubt this time around that they belong in the championship game. The college football predictions experts at online sportsbook SBG Global has the Texas Longhorns listed at +650 odds to win the 2010 BCS National Championship Title. #3 UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS 2008 Season Record: 12-1 2008 Final Rank: 3 Returning Starters Offense: 6 Returning Starts Defense: 8 Pros: Senior quarterback Colt McCoy (3859 yards, 34 touchdowns) had a magical year in 2008, but he has some unfinished business after just missing out on the Heisman Trophy (finishing second to Sam Bradford), and a chance at the conference and national titles. The offensive line returns four starters from a year ago. Sergio Kindle (10 sacks in 2008) will move from linebacker to defensive end this season and will lead the pass rush. The secondary is solid, let by cornerbacks Chykie Brown and Aaron Williams. Cons: While the defense was great against the run a year ago (third in the nation), they ranked 104th against the pass. The running game was not strong a year ago (ranked 41st) as McCoy topped the team with 561 yards rushing. Vondrell McGee (376 yards) and Cody Johnson (338 yards) are the top returning runners, but neither has displayed the ability to be featured back. Someone must emerge as a consistent runner to take pressure off of McCoy. Surprise Stat: Receiver Jordan Shipley caught 11 touchdown passes a year ago and also returned both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown.
The college football predictions odds makers at SBG Global have the Texas Longhorns +110 odds favorites to win the Big 12 Conference Title. Overall Outlook: the Longhorns lost a number of key players from a year ago, but shouldn’t miss a beat. McCoy is the one player that Texas cannot do without in 2009 and they fortunately have a veteran line to ensure that nothing happens to their field general. The defense is solid and full of talented young players. The Longhorns may have found McCoy’s successor in newcomer Garrett Gilbert. They also strengthened the offensive line with four signings, including left tackle Mason Walters. The focus on defense was the end position where four players, including potential star Alex Okafor, were added to the roster. Big Game: Texas learned last season that every game is a big game in the Big 12. Very early they will get an opportunity to avenge their only loss from a year ago, as they host Texas Tech in the third game of the season. You can bet that Texas will also be ready for the annual battle against Oklahoma on October 17. In addition to conference and national championship connotations, the game also could help decide the race for the Heisman Trophy, as it will feature the top two finishers from a year ago. Key to Success: The defensive line was a major strength a year ago. Though they lost three starters from a year ago. Though they lost three starters from that unit, senior Lamarr Houston returns and should serve as the anchor. Expect Texas to channel the disappointment from a year ago into the kind of focus that will make things miserable for many opponents.
