Utah Utes 2009 College Football Predictions: With their dominating Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama to close out an undefeated season, Utah proved that, at least for one game, they could compete with any team in the country. However, given their status as a member of a non-BCS league, they will have to prove themselves all over again in 2009 if they hope to return to a BCS bowl game. The college football predictions experts at online sportsbook SBG Global has the Utah Utes listed at +1200 odds to win the 2010 BCS National Championship Title. #4 UTAH UTES 2008 Season Record: 13-0 2008 Final Rank: 4 Returning Starters on Offense: 4 Returning Starts on Defense: 7 Pros: The Utes return several key starters from a defensive unit that allowed only 17 points per game a year ago while ranking 11th nationally in total yards allowed. Defensive end Koa Misi and linebackers Stevenson Sylvester and Mike Wright will anchor the unit. The offensive line returns three starters including left tackle Zane Beadles. Cons: Replacing quarterback Brian Johnson, the MWC Offensive Player of the Year, is the first order of business for the Utes. Junior Corbin Louks saw regular action a year ago, but primarily in running situations. Junior college transfer Terrance Cain seems to have the inside track to the starting spot, but redshirt freshman DeVonte Christopher and true freshman Jordan Wynn will also compete for playing time. The top three receivers from a year ago are all gone, but Jereme Brooks and David Reed each caught 25 or more passes last season and should see their numbers increase in 2009. Surprise Stat: Utah started and ended games strong a year ago. They outscored their opponents 117-54 in the first quarter and 128-55 in the fourth period.

Overall Outlook: It will be tough for Utah to duplicate their undefeated season of a year ago, but they are a talented team and will contend with Texas Christian and Brigham Young for the Mountain West Conference championship. In addition to a solid 2009 recruiting class, Utah also has 24 redshirt freshmen that have year of experience in the system and will help neutralize some of the losses from a year ago. Defensive end James Aiono was one of the top junior college recruits in the nation and could help ease the loss of defensive end Paul Kruger. Big Game: Wins in non-conference games at Oregon and against Louisville are essential if Utah hopes to return to a BCS game. However, the most significant game on the schedule will undoubtedly be the November 14 game at TCU. Utah edged the Horned Frogs 13-10 a year ago and their battle this season will likely decide the conference championship. Key to Success: With a new quarterback running the offense, the running game will be even more important for Utah than a year ago. Matt Asiata let the team with 707 yards and 12 touchdowns a year ago and should have even more opportunities to carry the ball in 2009. Eddie Wide averaged 6.1 yards on his 30 carries and has the potential to be the big-play back for the Utes. Another key graduation loss was four-year starting kicker/punter Louie Sakoda. He connected on 22 of 24 field goals a year ago while averaging 41 yards per kick. Ben Vroman will take over the place kicking duties, but he will have a tough challenge replacing the consistency of Sakoda.
