2010 College Football Week 1 Predictions: Finally its here, the 2010 college football campaign – beginning Thursday night. Perhaps the most enjoyable activities is making predictions and picks. With all of the top 25 college football teams getting started, we will make a few predictions on what we think will happen.
Top-ranked Alabama (SEC) should have an easy time of it with San Jose State (WAC) but giving 37 1/2 points is a bundle. Oddsmakers are banking on the public jumping on the Tide and the more than six TD spread. Of course Alabama has the tools to beat the Spartans by 50 or more, but will they? No – Bama 45-SJSU 10.
No. 2 ranked Ohio State of the BIG TEN welcomes Marshall (C-USA) into Ohio Stadium in Columbus Thursday night. Sportsbook.com is listing the Buckeyes as -28 1/2 point favorites. Prediction: Buckeyes win 38-10.Traditionally Ohio State takes it easy in opening games versus inferior competition.
No. 3 Boise State really doesn't have anything to prove but they will be happy to do it. Every time the Broncos are challenged they seem to step up. Sportsbook.com has the Broncos lined as -2 point favorites with a 50 total versus No. 10 Virginia Tech when they play at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. We predict the score falls UNDER 50 points. Boise State plays great defense too.
No. 4 Florida (SEC) opens its season in Gainsville, Fla., by hosting MAC member Miami (Ohio) . The Redhawks are traditionally one of the better MAC programs but have slipped the past few years. It doesn't really matter because the Gators would handle Miami regardless how they are doing in the MAC. Sportsbook favors the Gators by 35. Florida wins 56-13.
No. 5 Texas (Big 12) travels to Houston to take on old Southwest Conference rival Rice (C-USA). Sportsbook has lined the Longhorns as -30 1/2 chalk favorites. They are probably correct; Texas wins big 48-7.
No. 6 TCU (MWC) plays No. 24 Oregon State (Pac 10)on home turf at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The Horn Frogs are favored by -13 1/2 at Sportsbook with a 50 1/2 total. The Beavers getting +13 1/2 is the best value and the total will go lower than 50 1/2. TCU squeaks by 24-21.
No. 7 Oklahoma (Big 12) welcomes the Aggies of Utah State (WAC) into Norman for its opener. The Sooners are favored by 34 points with a 57 total. Take the points and the Aggies – Sooners still roll, 44-14.
No. 12 Wisconsin travels to the bright lights of Las Vegas to play the Rebels of UNLV. The Badgers, expected to challenge Ohio State for BIG TEN superiority in 2010, is favored versus the Rebels by 20 1/2 with a 57 1/2 total. Wisconsin will win after getting a strong home challenge by UNLV; Wisconsin wins 35-20.
No. 14 USC (Pac 10) will get the Lane Kiffin era started with a trip to Hawai'i (WAC) on Thursday to play the Warriors. The Trojans are favored by 21 1/2 with a 54 total. Look for the Warriors to protect home turf on the Island. USC survives 27-24.
No. 15 Pittsburgh and No. 24 (USA-Today) Utah will bang heads in this top 25 matchup at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Thursday. Sportsbook likes the home team Utah by -3 and we agree. Utah wins with home cooking in a close one, 28-27.
No. 18 North Carolina has been groomed by coach Butch Davis the past two years back onto the National scene. Now they have to prove they belong when they travel to Atlanta to take on No. 21 LSU at the Georgia Dome Saturday night. The pressure is on for Les Miles at LSU to show the Tigers haven't slipped. Sportsbook.com oddsmakers favor the Tigers by -4 with a 42 total. We predict the total falls UNDER 42 points in a game dominated by defenses. North Carolina gets the win 17-14.
No. 22 Auburn (SEC) welcomes the Red Wolves of Arkansas State (Sun Belt) down to the plaines for a game at Jordan-Hare Stadium, where Sportsbook oddsmakers favor the Tigers by -31. The Red Wolves will not be intimidated by the big time SEC atmosphere. Arkansas State has historically covered well in these big non conference games. Just two years ago the Red Wolves won SU at Texas A&M as +18 road dogs. Auburn wins, but ASU comes to play; Auburn 47-30.
No. 23 Georgia (SEC) has invited the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (Sun Belt) football team for a game between the Hedges in Athens. Sportsbook.com has lined the Bulldogs favorite by a -28 1/2 chalk. Georgia wins 44-17 but ULL covers.
