Boise State Broncos 2009 College Football Picks: With the exception of a one point loss to Texas Christian University in the Poinsettia Bowl to end the 2008 season, Boise State could not have been more perfect. The undefeated regular season of the Broncos was its third in its last five seasons, including a 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma. Yet, Boise State sill gets disrespected every season, and another undefeated season in 2009 will still not be enough for the Broncos to be considered for a national championship. The college football picks experts at online sportsbook SBG Global has the Boise State Broncos listed at +8000 odds to win the 2010 BCS National Championship Title.

#13 BOISE STATE
2008 Season Record: 12-1
WAC Champions
2008 Final Rank: 13
Returning Starters on Offense: 6
Returning Starters on Defense: 5

Pros: What they will be considered for will be another WAC Conference Title. After owning the conference yet again last season, there is little doubt that a few key losses to the roster will jeopardize another championship. While this year’s defense may be a bit stronger than the Broncos offense, quarterback Kellen Moore finished last season with over 3,400 yards passing and a QB rating of 157.11. Through three receivers are not returning to the squad this season, Boise State has a knack for scoring points. Since 2000 Boise State is the nation’s highest scoring team. The Broncos are also almost unbeatable at home, posting an astounding 64-2 home record over the past 10 seasons. When it comes to the WAC, Boise State doesn’t care where they play. The Broncos are 70-5 against their in-conference rivals the past 10 seasons, best in the nation. Running back Jeremy Avery will be returning to the team. Avery split time with Ian Johnson and still accumulated 514 yards on the ground and four touchdowns, and will now be the featured back.  Defensive end Ryan Winterswyk returns this year after tallying 4.5 sacks in his sophomore campaign last season.

Cons: In a conference that Boise State is most certain to win again, its hard to pinpoint a severe negative.  One issue that the Broncos will have to deal with will be finding new targets for Moore to throw to. Jeremy Childs, Vinny Peretta, and Julian Hawkins were the top three receivers for Boise State last year. None of them are returning this year. This means that Moore is going to have to create a little more on the offensive side to keep the nations highest scoring offense atop the NCAA again. One wide receiver that will be returning is Austin Pettis. Pettis had 49 receptions in 2008, including nine touchdowns which led the Broncos, so at least Moore has one familiar facer to look at.

Overall Outlook: Boise State will have to overcome some key losses, but what team doesn’t have to? The Broncos winning the WAC is probably the safest bet among predicting conference champions for 2009. In hopes of yet another undefeated season, Boise State’s biggest test may be the very first game of the season against Oregon. The good news for the Broncos is that it’s a home game, and no one is better at home. Moore should have another impressive season, and Avery should pad his stats from last year as he will get more touches with Johnson gone.

Keys to Success: The offense should be fine, and the defense should be fine.  As long as the team stays healthy and plays consistently, there should be no problems in collecting another conference championship. The defensive line is going to have to step it up and be able to replace those who have departed, because the secondary should be able to shut down the pass. If the defensive line can do a good job against the run and the Broncos can survive an opening day date with the Ducks, the road to another perfect season should be pretty smooth. Boise State has been undefeated three of the past five seasons. Boise State is 64-2 at home over the past 10 seasons. They are 70-5 against WAC opponents over the past 10 seasons and have been the highest scoring offense over the past 10 seasons. Boise State has won the WAC Conference Championship 6 of the past 7 seasons.
