This year's Illini squad has 12 starters and 48 lettermen back, including seven and 25, respectively, on the defensive side of the ball. Zook can be thankful for that fact as the returning talent should result in a reduction of 2009's 30.2 points and 403 yards per game allowed averages.
The offense has a new signal caller in redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase, who takes over for Juice Williams. The highly recruited Scheelhaase, coincidently, played just a couple hours down the road from Columbia, Missouri at Kansas City's Rockhurst High School.
Many felt the Tigers were going to be a rebuilding team a season ago after losing the likes of Chase Daniel, Jeremy Macklin, and Chase Coffman; however, Missouri nearly won the Big 12 North for a third consecutive year after finishing up the regular season with an 8-4 record.
This year's squad returns 15 starters, including junior quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who threw for 3593 yards and 24 touchdowns as a sophomore. While the team loses its top receiver (Danario Alexander) from a season ago and leading rusher in the recently dismissed Derrick Washington, the Tigers spread offense has proven it can handle a personnel change.
Missouri easily won this game last year, blasting the Illini 37-9 in Gabbert's debut (26-of-35 for 325 yards, three touchdowns). Why should things be any different tomorrow? Tigers win another easy one.
