Oregon State Beavers 2009 College Football Picks: After a 0-2 start in which Oregon State lost to Stanford and got annihilated by Penn State, the 2008 campaign looked very grim. But the Beavers turned it around, finishing with nine wins and coming in 2nd place in the PAC-10. Much of Oregon’s success was thanks to a dynamic offense led by the Rodgers brothers. The college football picks experts at online sportsbook SBG Global has the Oregon State Beavers listed at +6500 odds to win the 2010 BCS National Championship Title. #19 OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY2008 Season Record: 9-4 2008 Final Rank: 19 Returning Starters on Offense: 7 Returning Starters on Defense: 3 Pros: Jacquizz and James Rodgers are returning in 2009. Jacquizz led Oregon State with 1,253 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns as a freshman. Brother James was a threat both on the ground and through the air. James was second on the Beavers with 408 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, but is also the teams leading returning starter in receiving with 51 receptions for 607 yards and four end zone appearances. Quarterback Lyle Moevao tossed 19 touchdowns in 2008, but his success 2009 will depend on how he recovers from shoulder surgery and he may not be ready to start the season. On the defensive side, linebacker Keaton Kristick totaled 82 tackles last year and will be the captain of the front seven, along with defensive tackle Sean Paea who led the Beavers with five sacks in 2008. Cons: Health. Quarterback Lyle Moevao had off season shoulder surgery and his return date is questionable. Jacquizz and James Rodgers missed the end of last season with injuries, resulting in a Sun Bowl victory in which Oregon State scored only three points. Jacquizz is recovering from a fracture in his shoulder, while James is recovering from a broken collarbone. Another weakness comes on the defensive side. Eight starters are gone from last season’s defense which finished second in the PAC-10 in total defense. Oregon State is going to introduce two new corners for the first time since 2005, in which the pass defense finished 115th of 117 in the country that season. The college football picks odds makers at SBG Global have the Oregon State Beavers +800 odds favorites to win the PAC 10 Conference Title. Overall Outlook: If Oregon State can stay healthy, they will be fine in 2009. While Moevao should be ready to captain the offense this season, he will need to work on his accuracy. He threw 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His task in being more careful is going to be difficult with three starters from last year’s offensive line not retuning. The defense is middle of the pack but the offense is among the top of the conference. Keys to Success: Getting off to a quick start this season is key. After turning around a poor start to last season, the last thing that Oregon State wants to do is dig itself another hole. The Beavers begin the season with three of its first four games at home, and have a season ending showdown at rival Oregon on Dec. 3. The Rodgers brothers should put up another impressive season and be the players to watch on offense. Oregon State has the tools to compete in the PaC-10 as long as key players can stay on the field. Oregon State has made a bowl game appearance the past three seasons. Oregon State has won its last five Bowl Games dating back to 2003.
