Based upon the game results, this rivalry has been one of the best in college football over the past decade. The 
contests have been close, for the most part, with Colorado holding a 6-4 straight up edge in the last 10 meetings. The Rams, though, have taken two of the last four games, including last year's dust up, which they won 23-17 as a +12 underdog.
Colorado State dominated the Buffaloes offense, limiting Dan Hawkins' squad to 29 rush yards on 21 attempts and 222 yards through the air. The Rams also sacked quarterback Cody Hawkins four times and picked him off once.
While the Buffs return 10 starters on offense this season, including the entire offensive line, they might have some early season kinks to work out this afternoon. Colorado has hardly been a September/October non-conference dynamo under Hawkins, going 6-10 outside of its Big 12 schedule.
Colorado State's defense should be much improved this season as well, which means CU's offense needs to find itself early. Steve Fairchild's group had its moments last year, the biggest being its effort against the Buffaloes, but they still gave up an average of 29.8 points per game. That number figures to drop with eight starters returning, including leading tackler Mychal Sisson (91 tackles, six sacks).
Colorado has been a real mystery with Hawkins on the sidelines, which makes this game difficult to call; however, the Buffs have been quite predictable playing as a favorite with a total between 44.5 and 47. CU is 1-6-1 against the spread in that role dating back to a 1999 meeting with the Rams. Take Colorado State +11 in this afternoon's Rocky Mountain clash.
