It wasn’t pretty for Notre Dame last Saturday getting pasted 33-3 by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in front of the home fans and a national television audience at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend. Now 0-1 and entering Saturday’s (Sept.8) game against Penn State in Happy Valley, the Irish are a not so happy -18.0 road underdog to the Nittany Lions. On Tuesday, Irish coach Charlie Weis named freshman quarterback Jimmy Clauson the starter for the game.
“I think he's ready to run the offense,” Weis told the press at Tuesday’s news conference. “If I didn't think he was ready, I wouldn't do this.”
When asked if the quarterback situation was going to be a week to week proposition Weis said, “I’m not looking at playing musical quarterbacks.”
Clausen had an outstanding prep career at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California. In 2006 he lead the Oaks Christian Lions to its third straight Division III state title throwing 49 touchdown passes for the season. Clausen never lost a football game he started in his 42 game prep career. Clausen also holds the California state record for career touchdowns (144). He was named the 2006 USA Today, Offensive Player of the Year. Recruiting analyst considered him a “once in a decade” quarterback talent and ranked him the No.1 overall prospect of the 2007 high school class.
In the Georgia Tech game, Clausen played the final two series and was 4-of-6 yards passing for 34 yards and was sacked once.
