Friday night’s ESPN game between Ball State and Navy should be an electrifying event if it anywhere resembles last year’s thriller when the Cardinals escaped Annapolis with a 34-31 OT victory. The Cardinals are listed at Sportsbook.com as 6 ½ -point favorites ATS and -270 on the money line with a 61 ½ total. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that each of these teams could hang 40-points each. The teams are pretty much the same as last year with the exception of a new coach at Annapolis. Paul Johnson has gone to Georgia Tech, however; long time assistant Ken Niumatalolo (a former midshipmen quarterback) was tabbed as his replacement. Niumatalolo named Ivan Jasper, another former Middie and Johnson disciple, as offensive coordinator. Under Johnson, Niumatalolo and Jasper learned the triple-option system that Navy runs. Apparently the offense hasn’t missed a beat. In the teams first game Aug. 30, Slot back Shun White set a single-game school record with 348 yards rushing as Navy routed visiting Towson 41-13. Jasper, calling plays from the press box, had the Tigers back on their heels all day as the Midshipmen piled up 558 yards rushing, fourth-highest single-game total in program history. Ball State opened the 2008 season with a 48-14 home win over Northeastern. The Cardinals scored 28 unanswered points to start the contest, including 21 points in a 6:40 span to start the second quarter. Ball State quarterback Nate Davis completed 21-of-24 passes (.875) for 290 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game in the fourth quarter.
