When it comes to college football in the U.S. northwest corridor, the Washington Huskies would like to announce itself as the new sheriff in town. Armed with a new quarterback, Jake Locker, and a new attitude, the dogs must go through the current best of the Northwest, the No.22 (AP) Boise State Broncos before occupying any higher plateau in the region or the nation. Washington will get its chance Saturday (Sept.
when the Boise State Broncos invade Husky Stadium in Seattle for a game to be televised on FSN with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
Oddsmakers at online sportsbook SBGglobal.com have Boise State a -3.0 road favorite at Washington with 58 total. The wagering public must not be swayed by the Huskies big win at Syracuse last week as early betting trends show 84 percent of wagering placed on Boise State while 80 percent expect the total to slip past the OVER.
The game with Boise State is a must win for the young Huskies as was last week’s game at Syracuse. In a game pundits predicted to be close, became a 42-12 romp for the Huskies. A win over the Broncos, owners of the nations longest winning streak at 14, would go a long way in instilling confidence before the Huskies embark on a brutal three game stretch playing No.12 Ohio State on the road Sept 15 followed by a trip to No.13 UCLA on Sept.23. Washington will close out the month when they host No. 1 Southern California.
While winning at Syracuse was imperative, Saturday’s Boise State game is the first real test this season. A loss here and the Huskies could easily enter October with a 1-4 record.
At Syracuse, redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Locker's debut did nothing to dispel his billing as one of the most talented recruits to play for Washington in years. He completed 14 of 19 passes, ran for another 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns and directed the Huskies' offense on five touchdown drives of 70 yards or longer.
Along with Locker's stellar first start, the game featured a career-high 147 yards rushing from senior running back Louis Rankin. He benefited from the Syracuse defenders' focus on Locker and a strong game from the Huskies' offensive line.
"I can't think of a game where there's been that much room since I've been here," Rankin said. "They did a good job blocking, and when they do that it makes my job a lot easier."
The victory gave the Huskies consecutive season-opening wins for the first time since 2000 and 2001.
Boise State opened its season on August 30 with a 56-7 win over visiting Weber State of the Division-1 Sub-Division Big Sky Conference. In the game, third team All-American Ian Johnson ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns and Taylor Tharp was steady in his first start at quarterback, leading Boise State to touchdowns on its first seven possessions and a 49-0 lead at halftime.
While Saturday’s game with Boise State might look daunting, the Huskies can take comfort in the fact that Boise State is 0-12 on the road versus BCS opponents.
"We've got another one of those unbelievable foes," Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham said of the Broncos. "We seem to have a lot of them on the schedule."
The Huskies are planning to see a mountain of different formations, looks and potential trick plays the Brocos might use.
