Texas Longhorns vs TCU Horned Frogs

by Benton Vale on Saturday, September 8th, 2007

If you’re old school the Texas/TCU game will send older fans on a trip down memory lane reminiscing about the old Southwest Conference wars when Texas and TCU strapped it on every year. Today, the two schools get to do it again and for the first time since their last meeting in 1995. The Longhorns, ranked No. 7 and No.19 Horn Frogs will kick it off at 7:00 p.m. ET from DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by FSN. Oddsmakers like the Longhorns at home installing them the favorite by a -10 point chalk with a 44 ½ point total. The road underdog is getting the benefit of the doubt in early wagering as 54 percent of the money bet ATS is on TCU while 74 percent expect the total to slide UNDER.

One of the more memorable wins in TCU football history was a 6-0 victory over No. 1 Texas in Austin
in 1961. The lone score in the game was a second-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Sonny Gibbs to Buddy Iles. Gibbs handed the ball to halfback Larry Thomas who tossed it back to Gibbs who then found Iles downfield for the score.

TCU and Texas met 81 times over the course of 99 years before the rivalry came to an end after the 1995 campaign. The Longhorns hold a 60-20-1 advantage. The first meeting was an 18-10 Texas win in Austin in 1897. Texas has won the last three games with TCU and 27 of the past 28 meetings. The Frogs' lone win in that stretch was a 23-14 victory in Fort Worth in 1992. Since winning 24-17 in 1967, TCU has dropped its last 14 contests in Austin.

Texas won its season opener defeating Arkansas State 21-13 in an unexpected closely contested football game. With the score 21-13 late in the final period, Arkansas State had a successful on-side kick nullified by officials because of an illegal formation. Texas sealed the victory by recovering the ensuing kick.

Andy Dalton threw for 205 yards and a touchdown in his first college start, and Justin Watts (1 yard) and Ryan Christian (12 yards) ran for scores in the second quarter as the Frogs beat Baylor 27-0 at Fort Worth. The win was the ninth straight for the Horned Frogs.

TCU has won its last five games against Big 12 teams, a streak that started with a season-opening victory at Oklahoma in 2005.
