2010 College Football Predictions Week 2: Now that Week-1 of the 2010 college football season is in the bag, it's time to take a look at some of the major week-2 matchups and make a few predictions. We got off to a profitable start last week hitting on 11 of 17 predictions including my big Monday night call for a Boise State win.
Week-2 is loaded with outstanding matchups starting Thursday when the Auburn Tigers head down to Starkville to play Mississippi State. This is a crucial SEC West battle for both teams. The last thing these two second year coaches, Dan Mullen at State and Gene Chizik at Auburn, want to do is start the brutal SEC West in a hole. I like Auburn as a 2-chalk favorite in this one.
Penn State at No. 1 Alabama: BetOnline lists the Crimson Tide as -11 1/2 point favorites versus Joe Paterno's No. 18 Nittany Lions. I like the Tide by two touchdowns. I'm taking it.
No. 12 Miami at 2 Ohio State -In my eyes the ACC has a lot to prove before I look at any team from that league as a serious BCS contender. Their 2010 predicted champion, Virginia Tech, just went down in flames — BetOnline has the Buckeyes favored by -9 versus the Hurricanes. I agree, Miami will struggle against the Buckeyes defense up in Columbus.
Michigan at Notre Dame: Brian Kelly had a successful debut as Notre Dame coach in week-1 with Notre Dame's 23-12 victory over in-state rival Purdue. Likewise for Rich Rodriguez at Michigan, as he began his third year with a 30-20 victory over Connecticut. Something will have to give when these two get together at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday. BetOnline.com lists the Irish as -3 1/2 chalk favorites in this one. I predict the dog howls at touchdown Jesus — take Michigan and the +3 1/2.
Georgia Tech at Kansas: KU was shocked in a week-1 SU loss to North Dakota State, an FCS school, at home in a non-lined game. Losing to a FCS (formerlly 1-AA) school is not how new coach Turner Gill would want to start his Big 12 career. Life does not get any easier as Georgia Tech, with its triple option attack, rolls into Lawrence for week-2. BetOnline oddsmakers like the Yellow Jackets by -14. I agree — KU will not be able to handle that triple-option GT brings.
Memphis at East Carolina: I was shocked at how good East Carolina's offense was in its game with Tulsa on Sunday. If Tulsa, one of the C-USA favorites couldn't stop it how will Memphis? BetOnline oddsmakers like the Pirates by -12 1/2 and so do I.
Idaho at Nebraska: Idaho is better than what most people think. They pounded a very good FCS North Dakota team 45-0 up in Moscow on Saturday. This team went 7-5 and won a bowl last year and look every bit as good this year. Nebraska is giving -28 in this one. I suggest take the points – Idaho's my prediction.
Oregon at Tennessee: Wow — the Ducks were rolling on Saturday with a 72-0 beat-down of New Mexico. Tennessee likewise beating FCS Tennessee-Martin 50-0. Both victories over profoundly inferior competition. BetOnline has lined the Ducks as -12 1/2 favorites in this one — at Tennessee — at Neyland Stadium – in front of the Vol's 107,000. I'm taking the points just to see what happens.
Troy at Oklahoma State: Didn't Troy bet the Pokes down in Alabama a few years back? It won't happen in Stillwater for sure. BetOnline has the Cowboys favored by -13 1/2. This is a fav I like.
Texas Tech at New Mexico: The Lobos are not very good and the Red Raiders are out to prove they are. I like Tommy Tuberville's Red Raiders in this one — BIG! Texas Tech wins by 5 TD's or more. BetOnline lists Tech by -24 1/2.
