Oregon senior quarterback Dennis Dixon has not been included in any previous Heisman talk but after his performance Saturday in Michigan’s Big House, he should. The versatile quarterback threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and ran 76 yards for a touchdown in the Ducks 39-7 victory. Combined, Dixon threw and ran for 368 yards and four touchdowns setting a career high. On the season, Dixon has completed 25 passes of 40 attempts for 426 yards and five touchdowns. On the ground Dixon has rushed 31 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns.
Considered the Heisman front-runner, Arkansas Razorback’s junior mister everything Darren McFadden did not play because the Hogs had a bye week sandwiched between last weeks game with Troy and next weeks game at Alabama. In the game with Troy, McFadden rushed for 151 yards on 24 carries for one touchdown. McFadden also threw for a 42 yard touchdown and caught two passes for 30 yards. No other Heisman candidate has the versatility of McFadden. The junior from Little Rock faces a tough challenge this week when the Razorbacks travel to Alabama for a game with the Crimson Tide.
West Virginia junior running back Steve Slaton continued his quest for the Heisman by rushing for 146 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns in the Mountaineers 48-23 win at cross-state rival Marshall University. On the season Slaton has carried the ball 40 times for 255 yards and five touchdowns. Slaton has shown versatility by catching four passes for 71 yards and one touchdown.
Rutgers junior running back Ray Rice became the Scarlet Knights career rushing leader while rushing for 175 yards and three touchdowns in the teams 41-24 win over the Naval Academy Friday night in Piscataway, N.J. In two games, Rice has rushed for 359 yards on 62 carries for an average of 5.8 yards per carry. Rice has also scored five touchdowns this season. On the receiving end, the senior runner has caught five passes for 61 yards and scored one touchdown.
Louisville senior quarterback Brian Brohm probably has the best chance of any quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy. While the Cardinals struggled defensively in their game with Middle Tennesse State, Brohm led the offense to the 58-42 win by completing 25-of-39 attempts for 401 yards and five touchdowns. After two games this season Brohm is 41-of-60 for 776 yards and nine touchdowns. Brohm has not thrown an interception or been sacked.
Hawaii senior quarterback Colt Brennan passed for 548 yards and four touchdowns in the Warriors 45-44 win at Louisiana Tech in overtime on Saturday night. While his numbers are stellar, Brennan is considered a system quarterback in a mid-major league. That will hurt him in the voting; however, based on numbers alone, he will get some Heisman support.
Michigan running back Mike Hart played a good game against Oregon in spite of his team’s failure. Hart finished the game with 127 yards on 25 carries. The bad news is Harts his team isn’t winning. Though not his fault, seldom will a player win the Heisman if his team isn’t successful.
Michigan’s demise in its game with Oregon combined with quarterback Chad Henne’s lackluster numbers and leg injury all but eliminate him from his pursuit of the Heisman Trophy. He was 12-of-23 for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception, a pass that sailed into double coverage on the opening drive. Late in the half Henne was injured as he ran out of bounds. He never returned to action and is doubtful for Saturday’s game with Notre Dame.
