East Carolina Pirates the anointed ones to college football gamblers

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

untitled cfb articleWhen it comes to college football betting, the East Carolina Pirates have become the ‘anointed ones’ in the eyes of college football gamblers. East Carolina of C-USA have definitely challenged the BCS system through the first two weeks of the 2008 campaign by going 2-0 SU and ATS against ranked opponents, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Entering Week-3, the Pirates have jumped to No. 14 in the AP poll. Next up for the Pirates is a trip to play the Tulane Green Wave in New Orleans. Online oddsmakers at LooseLines.com currently have the Pirates listed as a 12 ½-point favorites in this game. Last season the Pirates had an easy time of it with the Green Wave winning 35-12.

“We will play anyone anywhere,” has been the battle cry at Fresno State since coach Pat Hill came to campus back in the 90’s. And the WAC member Bulldogs have backed up those words too. The Bulldogs opened play in 2008 by beating Rutgers on the road SU 24-7 as a +3 ½ point ATS underdog. The No. 21 Bulldogs have a chance to make a statement in Week 3 when No. 10 Wisconsin travels to Fresno. The Bulldogs are listed as 1 ½ point underdogs to the Badgers at home.

No. 18 BYU will shoot for its second consecutive win over a PAC-10 program when UCLA visits LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday in Provo, Utah. The Cougars picked up a SU win at Washington last week after the Huskies failed on a long PAT attempt following a celebration penalty by quarterback Jake Locker. BYU came up short ATS as a 7 ½ point favorite in the 28-27 SU win.  The Cougars are installed as 8 ½-point favorites for Saturday’s game with the Bruins. UCLA last played Sep. 1, upsetting Tennessee 27-24 SU and covering as a +7 ½-point home underdog.

A great Week-3 match-up between BCS-Buster hopefuls takes place in Jonesboro, Ark., between Arkansas State University and Southern Mississippi. LooseLines.com has ASU favored by a 1 ½ point chalk in this one. The Red Wolves (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) opened the season by knocking off Texas A&M at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, Aug. 30, by the score of 18-14. The Red Wolves howled as a +19 ½ ATS dog in the game. ASU followed the win over Texas A&M with an 83-10 trouncing of Texas Southern (FCS) in a game not listed on the offshore betting board.

USM (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) opened its season by trouncing Sun Belt member Louisiana-Lafayette 51-21 on Aug. 30 easily covering the 9 ½-point spread. The Golden Eagles lost SU to Auburn 27-13 in Week-2 covering as a 19 ½-point underdog.
