The Texas team that meets Wyoming tomorrow will look vastly different than the one that beat the Cowboys last September. That fact was evident in the Longhorns 34-17 victory over Rice last weekend. Sophomore Garrett Gilbert took over for the departed McCoy under center and completed 14-of-23 passes for 172 yards in his first start. The defense, minus Lamarr Houston, Sergio Kindle, Roddrick Muckelroy, and Earl Thomas, limited the Owls to 14 first downs and 219 total yards in the victory.
While Texas was not overly impressive in the win over Rice, the Cowboys were even less impressive in their opener, scoring a 28-20 win against Southern Utah. Despite a stellar outing from Carta-Samuels, who threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns, the Thunderbirds finished the game with more first downs (24 to 20) and more yards (384 to 355) than Dave Christensen's team.
Most of Wyoming's offensive woes came from an inability to run the ball as the Pokes finished the game with a miserable 36 yards on 25 rushing attempts.
Wyoming, which is dealing with the tragic death of freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse (Narcisse died in a car wreck last weekend), figures to be outgained again tomorrow evening; however, this time the Cowboys will have difficulty parlaying that deficit that into a victory.
