The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have a veteran offense and a solid defense and with this prowess wanted to prove to the country there would be life after Ray Rice. That was before week-one’s mauling at the hands of Fresno State. Tonight, Rutgers has supposedly regrouped and is ready to show the country how good a team they have in 2008. And the Rutgers football team must do that against the visiting North Carolina Tar Heels whose needs mirror those of the Scarlet Knights. North Carolina would like to show the nation its rebuilding project is nearly complete under the auspices of second year coach Butch Davis.
The Tar Heels also got its 2008 season off to a rocky start though winning 35-27 against Football Championship Subdivision member McNeese State of the Southland Conference. In the game, the Tar Heels had to rally from a 20-14 third quarter deficit to win the game. The narrow victory over a lower division school has some supporters uneasy.
The bright spot for North Carolina was the performance of receiver/return specialist Brandon Tate. Tate scored on an 82-yard punt return and caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Yates which put UNC ahead for good. He added 106 rushing yards on just three carries and averaged 36.1 yards every time he touched the ball.
Rutgers' offense, despite the absence of Rice , has plenty of threats like a two standout wide receivers in Tiquan Underwood and Kenny Britt, a solid quarterback and a good offensive line. This is a well-coached offense that will be eager after ten days to capitalize on the opportunities it missed on against Fresno State.
