BYU trotted out a revamped offense (at least at the skill positions) in its season opener against the Washington Huskies
last week, but still managed to come away with a 23-17 victory. Freshman quarterback Jake Heaps was not overly impressive in his first start, completing 13-of-23 passes for 131 yards; however, backup Riley Nelson did look good after taking over in the second half. The junior passer connected on 11 of his 17 pass attempts for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougars finished the day with 23 first downs and 408 total yards. Bronco Mendenhall's squad also controlled the clock with a 146 yard effort on the ground, holding the ball for 34:07 compared to the Huskies 25:53.
Jake Locker and the Huskies offense did rack up 394 yards, but they failed to score against BYU's defense in the second half after hitting the break with a 17-14 lead.
Air Force steam rolled FCS school Northwestern State 65-21 in its opener on the strength of its vaunted rushing attack. Quarterback Tim Jefferson led the charge, completing 7-of-12 passes for two touchdowns while rushing eight times for 59 yards and two scores. The Falcons, which scored six second half touchdowns, finished the game with 30 first downs and 616 total yards (437 rush yards, 7.2 yards per carry).
The Demons hung tough in the first half, posting all 21 of their points in the first and second quarters, but they produced just 87 yards after the break.
BYU has won its last three meetings against the Falcons, including a 38-21 beat down last year in Provo, Utah. Quarterback Max Hall threw five touchdowns in the victory and the Cougars defense limited Air Force to 18 first downs and 300 total yards.
2010 College Football Picks: Take the Cougars +1 in this rivalry clash.
