The Stanford Cardinal opened their season with a big win over PAC 10 rival Oregon State. Last week, however, they returned to earth as Arizona State dismantled them in Tempe. This weekend Head Coach Jim Harbaugh will take his squad to Fort Worth, TX for a showdown with Texas Christian at Amon G. Carter Stadium (1:00pm ET). Stanford showed a strong running game against the Beavers in week one, but last week they had trouble getting things going versus the Sun Devils defense. While Toby Gerhart was effective (16 carries for 67 yards), the team as whole rushed for just 113 yards on 30 carries.
The Cardinal defense was chewed up pretty good too. Arizona State amassed 472 yards of offense, with 345 of that coming from the arm of quarterback Rudy Carpenter. They will need a better effort this week if they are to challenge TCU in Texas.
Texas Christian currently sits at 2-0 with two impressive performances under their belt. Last week the Horned Frogs ran roughshod over Stephen F. Austin as they posted 320 yards rushing and 525 total yards on their way to a 67-7 victory. On the 30th of August TCU scored a 26-3 road win over New Mexico. They ran for 171 yards in that contest and forced the Lobos into three turnovers. In two games, the TCU defense has allowed an average of just 159 yards per game.
