It was a tale of two games last season when the Huskies and Huskers hooked up. The first meeting Nebraska destroyed
Washington 56-21 in Seattle as quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for 150 yards and a score. Pelini's troops finished the game with 533 total yards, 383 of which came on the ground.
The second get together, a December 30 showdown at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, produced a far different result. The Huskies, a 14 point underdog, took advantage of a deflated Nebraska team by winning the postseason contest 19-7. The three-headed monster of Martinez, Roy Helu Jr., and Rex Burkhead, which accounted for 351 rush yards in the first meeting, combined for just 96 yards in the shocking loss.
Conversely, Washington pounded the rock for 268 yards in the bowl as running back Chris Polk and quarterback Jake Locker carried the ball 47 times for 260 yards and two scores.
Both teams come into Saturday's game undefeated with Nebraska scoring wins over Chattanooga (40-7) and Fresno State (42-29) while Washington knocked off Eastern Washington (30-27) and Hawaii (40-32) in the first two weeks of action.
Martinez helped the Huskers overcome a sloppy first half last weekend against the Bulldogs when he led the team on four second half scoring drives. The sophomore signal caller finished the game 10-for-21 for 219 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 166 yards and two scores.
Washington racked up 22 first downs and 466 total yards in its win over the Warriors as Keith Price, the sophomore replacement for the departed Locker, completed 18-of-25 passes for 315 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Polk accounted for 107 rush yards and one touchdown in the eight point victory.
Prediction: This game is Nebraska's to lose as it proved last year, when mentally focused, it is the superior squad. There is no championship game hangover here, only a revenge minded team anxious to make amends for its lackluster bowl appearance. Nebraska 41, Washington 20.
