Arkansas State opened its season on Sept. 1 against the Texas Longhorns in Austin and collected in the vicinity of $ 700,000. And to make matters worse, ASU came within a hair of beating the Horns. Well, they came within one touchdown which is way outside the comfort zone of any Texas faithful. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com had Texas chalked in as a -40 ½ point favorite in the game. ASU covered the line by over four touchdowns. In two games played through week-3, ASU is 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS in games against teams of more prestigious conferences. Troy has played its first three games against BCS foe, Arkansas and Florida of the SEC and Oklahoma State of the Big XII. Troy covered +22 at Arkansas, narrowly missed as a +26 ½ point underdog at Florida and beat Oklahoma State SU and ATS as a +10 ½ point home underdog. Louisiana-Lafayette, in its only game against BCS competition lost at South Carolina SU on Sept 1, 24-14 easily covering the +28 point spread. In week 3 the Sun Belt recorded three wins against non-conference foe, a first since the leagues inception in 2001. Florida Atlantic knocked off Minnesota of the BIG TEN 42-39, ArkansasState pounded SMU of C-USA 45-28, and Troy (+10 ½) enjoyed its home win and cover against Oklahoma State. The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, also of the Sun Belt, got week-2 off to a good start for underdogs covering as a +42 point road dog at Louisville. The Blue Raiders played with the Cardinals step for step until late losing by 16 SU in a 100-point score-fest between both teams. In its three games against BCS competition, Florida International has covered ATS twice, to ACC members Maryland (+23) and Miami (+32). Big covers haven’t been limited to the Sun Belt either. The Temple Owls, college footballs perennial whipping child of college football is now with the MAC after being ousted from the BIG EAST, has covered ATS 2-of-2 as three and four touchdown underdogs, +22 to Navy and +30 to UConn. Former Sun Belt member Idaho, now in its second year as a WAC member, has become a bookies favorite going 2-2 ATS against PAC 10 foe. The Vandals easily covered +50 ½ in their season opener at No. 1 Southern Cal losing 38-10 SU and in week-3 lost by 16 SU at Washing State covering ATS +23 ½. The gap between the “halves and halve-nots of college football is decreasing. And your betting bankroll probably reflects it. Before throwing down units on a heavily favored team, you had better think twice. A look at Week-4’s Big Dogs +21 ATS or more. Tulsa +21 vs. Oklahoma (Tulsa is 2-0 SU and ATS). Syracuse +37 @ Louisville (Orangemen are not very good but Louisville is 0-2 ATS including -42 to Middle Tennessee State). Temple +21 @ Bowling Green (I like the Owls to cover in this game). East Carolina +25 @ West Virginia (Pirates covered +28 ½ at Virginia Tech Sept 1). Ball State +22 ½ @ Nebraska (Cardinals are 2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS. Nebraska is BSU’s first BCS opponent). Ole Miss +21 vs. Florida (Rebels are struggling 0-3 SU and 0-3 ATS; however all lines were less than +7). Marshall +22 @ Cincinnati (I don’t see how I can leave this alone. Cincinnati is good but Marshall should keep it closer than 3-touchdowns). Washington State +24 ½ @ Southern Cal (a suckers bet; give me the Cougars). SMU + 20 ½ (my limit is +21 in this rivalry game. I expect it to get there too. Take SMU if the line goes beyond +21 by kickoff). |
