Hurricanes look to reclaim glory against Texas A&M

by Thomas Jensen on Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Hurricanes look to reclaim glory against Texas A&MCan the Miami Hurricanes reclaim some of their old glory when they host the 20th ranked Texas A&M Aggies tonight on ESPN? For the Miami Hurricanes it has been a long hard fall from grace since winning the National Championship in the 2002 Rose Bowl against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Since the 2005 Peach Bowl the Hurricanes have gone 1-7 against ranked opponents. Online sportsbook SportsBetting.com has the Miami Hurricanes -1.5 points in the Orange Bowl tonight.

In their first game this year against a ranked foe, the Hurricanes were demolished by the Oklahoma Sooners 51-13. Another Big 12 team will be looking to beat the odds as the underdog Aggies will look to silence the 50,000+ rabid Miami fans in attendence with their explosive running offense. Reduced juice sportsbook BetOnline.com has the Texas A&M Aggies at +2 points -105 juice.  The Aggies have yet to face a team with much of a heartbeat this season but their talent in the running game is undeniable having averaged 296.3 yards rushing in their first three games.

The Canes still have players on defense that can fly to the ball but with injuries depleting their defense some young players will have to step up and make their bones. Miami Quarterback Kyle Wright gave the blah Canes offense a glimmer of hope last week by making some accurate downfield passes, an element that was missing from opening day Miami QB Kirby Freeman.

The A&M defense isn't a very good unit and if Miami is able to put them in a hole early the Aggies ball control style offense will have a hard time trying to play catch up. Expect Miami to bring a healthy dose of their own running attack with gutsy RB Javarris James and super freshman Graig Cooper looking to expose the Aggies suspect run D.

The Hurricanes played the Oklahoma Sooners tough for the first 2 quarters of their game but in order to become a ranked team once again they have to play 4 motivated quarters of football against Texas A&M to establish themselves as contenders once again.
