College Football Picks: Oklahoma Sooners vs Tulsa Golden Hurricane

by Alexander Banks on Friday, September 21st, 2007

After three lopsided home victories , the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners, who also rank high in everybody’s weekly college football picks, will bus north up the Oklahoma turnpike to Tulsa for a rare Friday night game on ESPN2 against the Golden Hurricane in what is called a friendly little rivalry. It’s friendly because many of the Oklahoma players on both teams played with or against each other in high school. And that is where the friendliness stops. Once the ball kicks off, this game is about standing and Oklahoma has more to lose with a loss and Tulsa has plenty to gain.

The Sooners know this matchup with the Golden Hurricane is a very dangerous one in spite of what the oddsmakers say. Online sportsbook giant Bodog.com opened betting with OU favored by a -21 point chalk; however by Wednesday night the spread has moved out to -24.

This week, OU defensive players and coaches fretfully sat through film sessions studying the new Tulsa offense brought in by first year offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. They viewed Golden Hurricane’s quarterback Paul Smith shred the BYU secondary for a career high 454 yards through the air while guiding the team to 596 yards of total offense in their 55-47 victory at Tulsa’s old Chapman Stadium last week. The Golden Hurricane are now 2-0 SU and ATS with victories over BYU and Louisiana-Monroe.

First year Tulsa head coach Todd Graham at his weekly news conference, said his team is not intimidated by the fourth ranked Sooners.

“We're putting our undefeated record on the line against the best team in the country, in my opinion,” said Tulsa first year head coach Todd Graham. “I can tell you that, me personally, I was a lot more nervous playing Louisiana-Monroe because we're supposed to win that one. I kind of like this game. I'm having fun with this game. Our guys are getting ready to play. We have to play our very best football game to be successful and that's what we intend on doing.”

Oklahoma is rolling with freshman quarterback Sam Bradford under center. On Saturday, Bradford  threw for 255 yards now leads the nation in pass efficiency. The Sooners lead the nation in scoring averaging 61.3 scoring average and are No. 3 in total offense with 565.3 yards per game average.

Oddsmakers at BetOnline.com have set the game total at 68 points . Currently betting trends are not available on the total.
