The Dave Christensen era, which is in its third year, got off to a respectable start in Laramie with the team finishing 7-6 in
his inaugural season. Wyoming stumbled last year, though, falling all the way to 3-9. The 2011 Cowboys appear to have shaken off last season's woes, already matching their 2010 win total through the first three weeks of play.
Wyoming's most important victory came last week when it knocked off what looks to be a solid Bowling Green team 28-27 on the road. In all fairness to the Falcons, they did produce 10 more first downs and 118 more yards than the Cowboys, but Christensen's crew forced six turnovers and blocked an extra point at the end of regulation to improve to 3-0 in the season.
The Cowboys level of competition takes a big leap forward tomorrow in the form of the Huskers. Nebraska, which also comes into this contest with a 3-0 record, is coming off an impressive home win over the Washington Huskies in which it scored 51 points.
The Huskers Taylor Martinez led offense accumulated 464 total yards, 309 of which came on the ground. Martinez, who rushed for 83 yards and one score, threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the 13 point win. Junior tailback Rex Burkhead powered Nebraska's potent rushing attack with a 22 carry, 120 yard, two touchdown performance.
Nebraska's Black Shirt defense, which struggled against Fresno State two weekend's ago (444 total yards), had difficulty containing the Huskies offense. Washington produced 420 yards and converted seven of its 14 third down opportunites in the loss.
While the Cowboys offense does not have as many weapons as the Huskies, it is capable of putting points on the board. Until the Black Shirts shut down a legitimate opponent, it is difficult to side with the Huskers on a spread of 20 or more points, particularly on the road.
Nebraska certainly has enough talent to run away with this game and embarrass the Pokes on their home field, but Bo Pelini's squad needs to show a bit more consistency (0-3 against the spread) to earn the trust of football bettors.
