BYU had dropped two of its last three meetings with in-state rival Utah, but last weekend's 54-10 drubbing at the hands of 
the Utes set a new low for the Cougars. Bronco Mendenhall's squad looked solid in its first two games, a road win at Mississippi and a 17-16 loss to the Longhorns in Austin, but the wheels came off in the second half of last Saturday's contest.
BYU, which trailed the Utes 14-10 at the break, saw Utah score seven touchdowns thanks, in part, to seven Cougars' turnovers. Kyle Whittingham's club also finished the game with 242 rush yards on just 38 carries.
The most disturbing part of the loss, other than the seven giveaways and the leaky run defense, was the Cougars inability to move the ball on the ground. BYU managed all of 11 yards on 22 carries, a total that, admittedly, was limited somewhat by the large second half hole the Cougars found themselves in.
Quarterback Jake Heaps contributed to the low total, carrying the ball four times for -29 yards. Heaps, as a result of the team's anemic ground effort, threw 50 passes.
BYU's meeting with UCF now becomes crucial as another loss might ruin a season that many believed held a great deal of promise for the Cougars.
Beating the Knights, which went 10-3 a season ago, is no easy task, though. Central Florida stands at 2-1 after last weekend's 17-10 loss to a solid Florida International team, but the Knights rank second in the FBS in yards per game allowed (166). UCF also stomped Boston College two weeks ago, holding the offensively challenged Eagles to seven first downs and 141 total yards.
