Week 5 College Football Predictions and Odds

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Week 5 College Football Predictions and Odds: The marquis game of College Football Week-5 will no doubt be when the No. 3 ranked Georgia Bulldogs and No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide clash between the hedges at Georgia’s Sanford Stadium Saturday night in Athens, Georgia. Georgia and Alabama are both undefeated with each team’s eyes on the BCS national title. Oddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog (Bodoglife.com) have installed Georgia as a 7-point ATS favorite in the game. Money line and total odds are currently off the board. Look for Georgia to prevail in this game. While Alabama is off to a great start, these young Tide players have yet to be challenged by a top-notch SEC opponent. Saturday they will. Georgia wins by  10.

The No. 1 ranked USC Trojans and Oregon State Beavers get Week-5 started Thursday night in an ESPN nationally televised game when the two schools begin PAC-10 play on the Beavers home field, Reeser Stadium, in Corvallis, Oregon. Bodog oddsmakers have USC listed as a heavy 25 ½ point road favorite in the game. Gamblers need to be aware that Oregon State has played well against USC in recent years despite always being a big underdog. The Beavers ended USC’s 27-game Pac-10 win streak with a 33-31 win over then No. 3 Troy at Reser Stadium in 2005.

The Beavers got off to a slow start this season going 0-2 SU and ATS in road games at Stanford and Penn State. OSU bounced back with a 45-7 win over Hawaii at Corvallis in Week-3. The Beavers covered as a 14-point chalk ATS in the game.

The Trojans have been virtually unstoppable in their two games this season going 2-0 SU and ATS in games with Virginia and Ohio State. USC should handle the Beavers but covering the 25 ½-chalk could be challenging.

In another Thursday night match-up , the Tulane Green Wave will host the SMU Mustangs at the Louisiana Superdome in a live national television broadcast on CBS College Sports at 8 p.m. ET. The Green Wave are listed as 18 ½-point ATS favorite. While going 1-2 SU this season, Tulane has been a gamblers friend going 3-0 ATS including covers against ranked foe Alabama (+30) and East Carolina (+12). The Green Wave picked up a SU win and -5 cover last week over Louisiana-Monroe. SMU has struggled in the early going of 2008 with a 1-3 record SU and 1-2 ATS. The Mustangs got a back-door (+36 ½) point cover in its game at Texas Tech in Week-3.

Tulane should not have much problem beating SMU SU, however; could struggle covering the double-digit point spread.

Week-5 continues on Friday when the UConn Huskies travel to play the Louisville Cardinals in an ESPN2 televised contest from Papa Johns Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET. Bodoglife.com has the Cardinals listed as 3 ½-point favorites in this game. Both LouisvilleLouisville and UConn are coming off big home wins over BIG 12 opponents in Week-4. UConn won by 3-points SU falling short as a -13 point chalk favorite against Baylor while Louisville covered the 6-point chalk by defeating Kansas State 38-29 SU in Papa John’s Stadium. is 2-1 SU and 1-1 ATS while UConn is 4-0 SU but only 1-2 ATS in board listed games. Look for Louisville to pick up the win both SU and ATS at home in this game.

College Football Pick: Alabama appears to be a serious contender however still have many unproven players. The Tide rolled over a rebuilding Arkansas team last week but Hogs mistakes led more to their own undoing than Alabama was responsible for. They won’t get those kinds of gifts in Athens. Georgia is the pick -6 ½.
