Nevada vs BYU 2010 College Football Picks

by Reno Gold on Saturday, September 25th, 2010

The University of Nevada Wolf Pack football team are a team with a Hall of Fame coach, Gene Ault, and a running game that gives its opposition all kinds of fits. The result is a 3-0 record including a 52-31 victory over California last Saturday. The Wolf Pack will go on the road Saturday for the first time this season when they travel to play the Brigham Young University Cougars at Provo, Utah. BYU is 1-2 on the season after playing three difficult games with Washington, Air Force and Florida State. The only win came against the Huskies in Week-1. Sportsbook.com lists the Wolf Pack as 4-chalk favorites with a posted total of 63 points.

Nevada vs BYU 2010 College Football PicksWith the loss at FSU last week, BYU has dropped back-to-back games for the first time since the final two contests of 2008. The Cougars had not lost two consecutive regular-season games since losing at UCLA and at Tulsa in 2007.

The Wolf Pack seem to be playing up to expectations that were more or less in place last year. The team was putting up big numbers but couldn't buy a win against a quality team. So far, 2010 is counter to what happened in 2009.

For Nevada, their best passer is also their best runner, quarterback Colin Kaepernick. After three games he has completed 57-of-81 passes for 728 yards and six touchdowns. Kaepernick has run the ball 39 rushes for 378 yards and seven touchdowns. His average per rush is 9.5 yards. Kaepernick is the ninth player in NCAA history to rush for 3,000 yards and throw for 3,000 yards in his career. Kaepernick accounted for 329 yards of total offense and five TDs in the Wolf Packs 52-31 victory over California last Friday.

BYU running back J.J. Di Luigi ranks fourth in the MWC in rushing (265 yds.) and ninth in receiving (144 yds.) BYU linebacker Jordan Pendleton had a career-high 12 tackles, including a career-best nine solo stops against the Seminoles. Pendleton also shared team-high honors with 1.5 sacks, and 1.5 tackles for loss (10 yards), while forcing one fumble and recording one pass breakup.

The Pick: I made Cal my pick in last weeks game with Nevada because I didn't believe the Wolf Pack would step up in a big game. I was wrong and took a hit for it. What Nevada showed me agaisnt Cal, is a maturity that was absent in 2009. No team in the country is hitting on all cylanders more than Nevada. BYU's defense will struggle containing Kaepernick and company Saturday night. I like Nevada as a 4-chalk road favorite.
