College Football Odds Week 5: Week four of the college football season shook up the rankings even more than the previous weekend as four top 10 teams bit the dust. The air definitely came out of all the bluster surrounding the Hurricanes as did the Pac-10 championship talk concerning Cal. This week, however, will give the Golden Bears a chance at redemption as they square off against the Trojans, and it will also provide Miami an opportunity to reestablish itself against another top ranked opponent. No. 7 USC vs No. 24 California (+6): Raise your hand if you think the Golden Bears were looking past Oregon. Okay, now that
that has been established, what is to be made of Cal as they host the Trojans this Saturday? The team that showed up at Autzen Stadium was clearly a shell of the real Bears, but will that putrid performance effect them this week or will they show up in a big way to prove that it was an aberration? Only time will tell, but if three points and 207 yards is all a team can manage against the Ducks, they are not likely to produce all that much against a Trojans squad that is allowing just 10 points and 225 yards per game.
If Jahvid Best wants to win a Heisman, and get his team back to the top of the Pac-10, a strong showing against USC would help both of those causes a great deal. Best had just 16 carries for 55 yards against Oregon, a week after going for 131 and five touchdowns in Minnesota.
As for USC, they rebounded from last weekend's stunning loss at Washington with a 27-6 win over Washington State. Matt Barkley returned to the quarterback position and completed 13-of-22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. But something does not seem quite right in Trojan land. As mentioned, the defense has been dominant, but the offense seems to lack some explosion. That is not to say that the unit has not been explosive, it has, but it has not sustained it to the level that USC fans are accustomed to. The team is averaging a respectable 28.5 points and 424 yards per game this season, but those averages are a far less impressive 19.3 and 359 over their last three outings.
The next four games will be telling as USC plays at Cal, at Notre Dame, against Oregon State, and at Oregon.
