College Football Rankings Week 5: With college football 2009 – week 4 in our rear view mirror, we can look at the current college football rankings and see how today's – look of reality – differs from yesterday's pre-season expectations. While some teams, like Florida, Texas and Alabama, have performed as expected, others have tumbled – such as USC and Oklahoma.
Beginning with week 1, the two major college football rankings polls, AP and USA-Today/Coaches, had Florida on top followed by No. 2 Texas, 3 Oklahoma, 4 USC and 5 Alabama. By week 5, Oklahoma and USC had disappeared from college football rankings top five and replaced by LSU and Boise State.
After four weeks, teams from non-BCS conferences have wreaked havoc on college football rankings. Boise State, then ranked 14th, elevated its status by opening the season in an ESPN televised Thursday (Sept. 3) game with a 19-8 win over Oregon. BYU took cue from the Boise State to defeat Oklahoma two days later on opening Saturday.
Other's have played havoc on BCS conference teams – like TCU who defeated Virginia at home but went on the road in week 4 to top Clemson. Not to be outdone, C-USA member Houston went on the road to defeat No. 5 Oklahoma State (BIG 12) in week 2 and followed that with a week 4 victory at home over another BIG 12 power, Texas Tech.
It will be interesting to see how the college football rankings continue to transform as the season progresses. One thing we know for sure, it will always be unpredictable.
