Most college football experts believed Alabama had the best defense in the country coming into the
2011 season; through four games the Tide have validated those early prognostications, limiting their opposition to an average of 184 yards and eight points per game.
The fact that Arkansas put the most significant dent in Alabama's armor last Saturday with a 14 point, 14 first down, 226 yard showing says it all in regard to the defense Nick Saban has built. Saban's troops have been impressive on offense too, despite having a new quarterback in sophomore A.J. McCarron.
McCarron put together his best effort of the season against the Razorbacks, completing 15-of-20 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. His outing was bolstered by a tremendous day from running back Trent Richardson, who carried the ball 17 times for 126 yards and caught three passes for 85 yards and one touchdown.
Florida's offense, under the direction of new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, has posted some sterling numbers in the early going as well, averaging 40.3 points and 468.5 yards per game against Florida Atlantic, UAB, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
Like Alabama, Will Muschamp's Gators produced their best offensive showing of the season last weekend in a 48-10 pasting of SEC East rival Kentucky. Florida rushed for 405 yards in the win as seniors Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey combined for 262 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries.
Defensively the Gators are tied for fourth in the FBS in points per game allowed at nine and the 231.8 yards per contest they are allowing ranks fifth behind only Michigan State, Alabama, UCF, and Virginia Tech.
Saturday's game certainly marks a step up in competition for Florida, but, no offense to Arkansas, it also represents Alabama's biggest challenge thus far as well. The Gators have the athletes to match the Tide, something Penn State (Bama's other big road foe) did not, and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium should be at a fever pitch, especially with the late start time. Alabama has won the last two in this series with relative ease, but something about this game feels a little bit different.
