Texas vs. Oklahoma 2010 College Football Picks

by Reno Gold on Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Texas vs. Oklahoma 2010 College Football Picks: The first Saturday in October is synonymous with "The Red River Rivalry" , a football game played between the University of Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma University Sooners at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. This game almost always establishes the front runner in the BIG 12 Conference. While this game might not carry national implications of past years, it's still Texas/Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ABC.

Texas vs. Oklahoma 2010 College Football PicksTexas leads the series 59-40-5, but since the Big 12 Conference formed in 1996, the two schools have split 14 meetings. Last year’s 16-13 Texas victory was the closest game in the series since 1997.

Oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com have installed OU as 4 1/2-chalk favorites versus Texas with a 45 OVER/UNDER total.

The key to who wins this game will no doubt be the team who runs the ball best. It's like that almost every year. Last year the vaunted Texas defense had shut down OU's ground game , holding it to -16 rushing yards.

The Sooners are currently 4-0 on the season, but have not dominated as fans are used to seeing. Many question marks were raised when OU slipped past Utah State in their opener 31-24, falling way short of covering the 34 1/2-point betting spread. Of course at that time, the public wasn't aware of how good Utah State really was. OU looked very good the folowing week hosting Florida State winning 47-7 and covering as a touchdown favorite. The past two weeks, the Sooners have escaped with narrow victories by a combined five points to Air Force (at home) and a road game at Cincinnati. On the year, OU is 1-3 ATS while the OVER/UNDER total has split 2-2.

The Longhorns year has gone much like OU's. Up until last week's home loss to UCLA, Texas seemed to be just getting by. They opened the season with an unimpressive 34-17 win over Rice, and failing to cover the 31 1/2-chalk spread in the process. Texas hosted an inept Wyoming squad in Week-2, picking up a 34-7 win, but again falling short of covering as a -27 1/2 favorite. The Longhorns went on the road for the first time and played their most impressive game agaist rival Texas Tech, pulling out a 24-14 victory as a -3 chalk favorite. In Week-4, things fell apart for UT, losing SU as a 15 1/2-point favorite to UCLA at Texas Memorial Stadium.

Since Texas' loss at home to UCLA last week, people can't get off the Longhorns band wagon fast enough. SBGglobal.com oddsmakers favor the Sooners by -3 1/2. I couldn't disagree more – I like the Longhorns getting 3 1/2.
