California vs. USC College Football Picks: The Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears and USC Trojans football teams have one thing in common. They have suffered unexpected losses on the road that might have derailed each schools BCS National Championship hopes. While one loss does not disqualify a team from championship contention, two losses almost always does. On Saturday, (8 pm ET ABC) No 7 USC must travel to Berkeley, Calif., to play the No 24 Bears in a major Pac-10 clash that could save the season for the winner and kill any championship hopes for the loser.

The 3-1 Trojans opened the season with an easy win over San Jose State, then pulled out a tough one at Ohio State. But Southern Cal then went to Washington as 20-point road chalk and lost outright 16-13, despite outgaining the Huskies by 194 yards. USC bounced back last week, though, to win at Washington State, but came nowhere close to covering the spread as 45-point favorites. They are now 1-3 ATS this year.

The Trojans suffered a significant hit this week when RB Stafon Johnson, who had already scored five touchdowns this season, dropped a barbell on his throat and suffered a crushed larynx. He is expected to miss the rest of this season, and is probably lucky just to be alive.

The 3-1 Bears, meanwhile, began the season with wins over Maryland, Eastern Washington, and Minnesota, covering the lines all three times. But last week Cal laid an egg, falling at Oregon 42-3 as 5.5-point road chalk. The vaunted Cal offense mustered just 207 yards, while the Bears’ defense gave up an alarming 524 yards.

USC has beaten the Bears five times in a row, winning last year at the Coliseum 17-3, holding Cal to just 165 total yards.
