The Louisville Cardinals of the BIG EAST and Utah Utes of the Mountain West (MWC) are two teams whom enter Week-6 of the college football season with huge question marks usually answered by this point of a campaign. Both Louisville and Utah entered the season with lofty expectations, but their performances have flown well below what has been expected. The two teams will clash Friday night on ESPN2 with kickoff at 8 p.m. ET at Papa John's Stadium in Louisville.
For Louisville under first year head coach Steve Kragthorpe, the team has been very disappointing in spite of its 3-2 record. The three wins have come against Murray State (of championship sub-division formerly Div. 1AA), Sun Belt member Middle Tennessee and struggling ACC member North Carolina State, none of which will get the Cardinal’s fan base excited. The loses, however, do not sit well with backers; especially for a team that started the year as a top-10 team in every pre-season poll. Louisville fell to in-state rival Kentucky 34-40 in the waning seconds of the game in week-3 and stumbled at home to lowly Syracuse 35-38 the next week. Of Louisville’s five-games played, the team is 1-3 against the spread.
It doesn’t get any better for the Utes under third year head coach Kyle Whittingham. At least for Utah, their few moments of brilliance came against quality competition such as its 44-7 SU victory at UCLA as a +16.5 point road underdog. That huge win makes it hard to explain their getting blanked 27-0 the next week at UNLV. Fortunately for Utah, they rebounded nicely in last weeks 34-18 win at home over rival Utah State.
Since both programs have shown great inconsistency, the edge in Friday’s game will go to the team that brings it’s A-game. If each shows up ready to play then the edge would go to the Cardinals.
