2010 College Football Picks Week 6: Defending national champion Alabama passed another tough test last week, trouncing Florida on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. This Saturday the Crimson Tide take on another ranked conference opponent, this time on the road, when the top-ranked team in the land visits Columbia, South Carolina to play the ol' ball coach and his 19th-ranked Gamecocks (3:30 pm Eastern, CBS). Alabama is a 7-point favorite at South Carolina . I agree – I like Alabama to have no problem with the Gamecocks – take Bama -7.
Week 6 college football action at BetUS.com has already begun, and continues Thursday night with a Big 12 battle of unbeatens when No. 7 and 4-0 Nebraska heads for Manhattan, Kansas to tangle with 4-0 Kansas State (7:30, ESPN). And Friday No. 22 and 4-0 Oklahoma State hits the the road for a non-conference game at 2-2 Louisiana-Lafayette (9:00, ESPN2).
As of Thursday morning BetUS.com is listing the Huskers at -10.5 over the Wildcats, and the Cowboys at -23.5 over the Ragin' Cajuns. My bet – Kansas State at home +10.5, but leaving the Cowboys and Ragin' Cajuns alone.
Saturday's Top-25 action includes No. 2 and 5-0 Ohio State listed as a 23-point home favorite over 3-1 Indiana (noon, ESPN). Sorry, another one I'm passing on.
No. 3 and 5-0 Oregon, coming off a big come-from-behind romp over Stanford, is a 36.5-point favorite at 1-4 Washington State (5:00). I'm passing on this one too.
No. 4 Boise State, which dropped in the ranking despite a 59-point victory last Saturday, is a 39-point favorite at home over 3-2 Toledo (8:00). I'm taking Toledo +39.
No. 5 Texas Christian is a 34-point favorite at home over 2-3 Wyoming (3:30). Give me the Cowboys +34.
No. 8 and 5-0 Auburn is a 6-point road favorite at 3-2 Kentucky (7:30 E, ESPN2). War Eagle – got to take Auburn -6.
No. 9 and 4-0 Arizona is a 7.5-point favorite at home over 2-2 Oregon State (6:00, Versus). Go Cats, give me Arizona -7.5.
No. 10 and 4-0 Utah is a 6.5-point road fave at 3-2 Iowa State (7:00). Possible upset here – I'm taking the Cyclones +6 1/2.
No. 11 and 3-1 Arkansas, coming off a bye week, is 6.5-point chalk over 3-1 Texas A&M at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington (3:30, ABC). My pick – WooPigSooie – I'm takin' the Hogs -6 1/2.
No. 12 LSU, a fortunate winner over Tennessee last Saturday, is a 7-point road dog at No. 14 and 4-1 Florida (7:30, ESPN). LSU's days are numbered; Gator's Chomp -7.
No. 13 and 3-1 Miami (Fla.) is a 6-point favorite at home over No. 23 and 4-1 Florida State (8:00, ABC). I agree – Canes win at home by a touchdown. I'm taking Miami -6.
No. 16 and 4-1 Stanford is giving 4-1 Southern Cal nine points (8 E, ABC). Sorry, I'm staying away.
Coach Dantonio and No. 17 and 5-0 Michigan State are getting 4.5 points from No. 18 and 5-0 Michigan at the Big House (3:30, ABC/ESPN). I like the Spartans -4.5 in this one.
No. 20 and 4-1 Wisconsin is -21.5 at home over 1-4 Minnesota in the battle for Paul Bunyan's ax (noon, BTN). I'm not going there, leaving it alone.
No. 21 and 5-0 Nevada is a 39.5-point favorite at home over 1-4 San Jose State (10:30, ESPNU). No bet for me here.
No. 24 and 4-0 Missouri is a 12.5-point favorite at home over 3-1 Colorado (7:00).
No. 25 and 4-1 Air Force, coming off its rivalry win over Navy, is a 25-point favorite at home over 1-4 Colorado State (2). Have you figured it out yet that I don't like lopsided lines; unless I like the underdog.
So far this season teams ranked in the AP Top 25 are 77-7 straight up when playing unranked teams, 38-35 vs. the BetUS.com pointspreads.
And of the 17 games played so far matching two ranked teams, the higher-ranked outfits have won 12 of those games outright, but are only 9-8 vs. the numbers.
