LSU improved to 5-0 last weekend with a nail-biting win over Tennessee in Baton Rouge. The Tigers made a frantic effort to
get a final goal line play called while trailing the Volunteerers 10-14 in the fourth, and they did, but a bad snap resulted in a Vols sack. The sloppy play seemingly ended the game, but Tennessee was flagged for having 13 defenders on the field, thus giving LSU one final opportunity. The Tigers took advantage of the gift, cashing in with a one yard touchdown run to give them a 16-14 victory.
In reality, the game would never have been so close had LSU not turned the ball over four times. The Tigers had eight more first downs and 217 more yards than Tennessee as quarterback Jordan Jefferson and running back Stevan Ridley, who scored the game winning touchdown, combined for 223 rush yards and two scores on 27 touches.
Florida, unlike Les Miles' squad, could not avoid its first loss as Alabama trampled the Gators 31-6 in Tuscaloosa. Urban Meyer's troops turned in an ugly offensive performance, producing just 17 first downs and 281 total yards while turning the ball over four times. Quarterback John Brantley suffered through his worst outing of the season, completing 16 of his 31 passes for 202 yards and two interceptions.
The defense played well, despite 31 points from the Crimson Tide, holding Alabama to 18 first downs and 273 total yards. Running backs Trent Richardson and Mark Ingram combined for 110 rush yards and two touchdowns, but quarterback Greg McElroy threw for a total of 84 yards.
The Gators have won two in a row and three of the last four against the Tigers and, with the exception of last year's 13-3 victory (an ATS tie), Florida has covered four of the last five times against LSU.
