Cal opened its conference season with a 36-33 overtime win at Colorado, but the Bears have seen their situation take a
turn for the worse since that victory. Jeff Tedford's squad followed up its win over the Buffaloes with a 63-12 drubbing of FCS school Presbyterian, but it comes into tomorrow's game off of road losses at Washington and at Oregon.
The Bears hung with the Ducks for a half last Thursday in Eugene, but Oregon poured it on after the break, outscoring Cal 29-0 in the second half to take home a 43-15 win. Cal produced plenty of offense in the loss, posting 25 first downs and 465 total yards, but the Bears defense could not slow down Darron Thomas, LaMichael James, and company. Oregon finished the game with 563 total yards and it converted eight of its 15 third down attempts. Get $50 in Free CFB Picks Here.
Fortunately for Cal, they face a less potent force in the Trojans tomorrow. USC brings plenty to the table, though, as it demonstrated last week against the hapless Arizona Wildcats. The 4-1 Trojans scored a season high 48 points in the seven point victory as quarterback Matt Barkley threw for a school-record 468 yards. Barkley, who led USC to a 26 first down, 582 yard day, also tossed four touchdowns of 82, 38, 7, and 28 yards.
USC's defense, like Cal's unit, struggled its last time out, giving up 37 first downs and 554 yards to an Arizona team that has won just one game this season.
The Trojans have won the last seven in this series, but it would appear both teams enter Thursday's game on equal footing. Neither team has been overwhelming thus far and both look capable of either dropping or winning this contest by 10 or more points. Given that potential swing, the home team getting points against a USC squad that dropped its lone road game 43-22 seems like the smart choice.
