College Football Picks: Louisville Cardinals vs UConn Huskies

by Alexander Banks on Friday, October 19th, 2007

After losing three of their previous four football games , the Louisville Cardinals regrouped to defeat the unbeaten Cincinnati Bearcats on the road in week-7. Now, the 4-3 Cardinals find themselves on the road again except this time to face the University of Connecticut Huskies in a Friday ESPN game from Rentschler Field in East Hartford Conn. After running off five straight victories to open the season, UConn suffered its first defeat last week to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. With the loss, the Huskies return to BIG EAST action with a overall 5-1 record and 1-0 conference mark.

In spite of Louisville’s early troubles losing to Kentucky, Syracuse and Utah, oddsmakers at online sports wagering giant Sportsbook.com seem to think the Cardinal’s will return to their usual dominating form by installing them the favorite by a 3-point chalk in the game with a 61 point total. The Cardinals are slight money line favorites at -155 while UConn is getting +135 ML juice as a home underdog.

Louisville carries a 3-0 all time winning mark in its series with UConn with the last meeting at Papa John Stadium in Louisville in 2006 when the sixth ranked Cardinals blasted the Huskies 48-17. The last meeting between the schools at Rentschler Field resulted in a 30-20 win for Louisville.

The Cardinals evened their record at 1-1 in the BIG EAST and 4-3 overall with an impressive 28-24 win over 15th-ranked Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium. Senior quarterback Brian Brohm was huge in the second half in guiding the Cardinals to their first league win. Brohm completed 28-of-38 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns and senior wide receiver Harry Douglas returned to action after missing two games with seven catches for 118 yards.

Sophomore running back Anthony Allen put the Cardinals ahead for good when he scored from three yards out with 10:37 to play. The Cardinals' defense came up big, forcing four turnovers and limiting Cincinnati to a season-low 24 points.

The Cardinals went to Cincinnati as 9-point road underdogs. The 52 points scored were UNDER the posted total of 67.5.

The Huskies were defeated 17-16 by the Cavaliers in Week 7, as 3-point underdogs. The final score fell UNDER the posted total of 44.

Tyler Lorenzen completed 17-of-33 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies.

UConn has been a solid money maker for its wagering backers going 4-1 ATS while Louisville has been a disappointment going 2-4 ATS. The total has gone UNDER in 3 of 5 games that a total was posted. For UConn, the total has gone OVER in 2-of-3 games a total was posted.
