If you don't like the weekly Heisman Trophy landscape, check back in a week – it will surely change – as was the case going from week-7 to week-8 of this 2010 college football season. Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor was the betting favorite to win the trophy last week, but after failing to lead the Buckeyes to victory against Wisconsin, Pryor has slipped to fourth (+500) on the current betting list, replaced by new favorite, Auburn junior quarterback Cam Newton (+200 odds).
Newton stepped up his Heisman Trophy chances by rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for another in Auburn's 65-43 win over 12th ranked Arkansas last Saturday. A week ago, Newton was listed on the Sportsbook.com Heisman Trophy Board at +1000 odds along with Arkansas' Ryan Mallett. In the game Mallett exited with a concussion in the second quarter and Auburn goes on to win the game. Mallett, has dropped off the list while Newton jumps to the top.
In my Week-7 Heisman Blog I said my favorite to win the Heisman Trophy is Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore. Somebody must be listening as his odds jumped to second on the list, from +800 a week ago to +250 today. You can expect Moore to hold his ground because Boise State will not lose a game the rest of the regular season. Moore remains my prediction to win the Heisman Trophy.
Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is hanging in there with third best odds (+350) in spite of his teams losing effort to Texas in week-7. Denard Robinson, the leader two weeks ago has trailed off, his winning odds at +800.
Oregon running back LaMichael James (+1000), Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck (+1000), Wisconsin running back John Clay (+1200) and Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones (+1200) are considered long-shots at this point. Of course, all that can change by Week 9 – and probably will.
