West Virginia last played on October 8 when it stomped Big East counterpart Connecticut 43-16 in Morgantown. The easy win
marked the Mountaineers first conference win and improved its overall record to 5-1 on the season.
Despite West Virginia's impressive record, it still has much work to do in order to secure the conference title it was projected to win back in August. Cincinnati is tied with the Mountaineers at 1-0 and 5-1 and, shockingly, Rutgers sits atop the league standings with a 2-0 Big East record and the same 5-1 overall tally.
That makes tonight's game critical for both West Virginia and Syracuse. The Orange brought their season record to 4-2 two Saturdays ago with a 37-34 road win at Tulane, but Syracuse dropped its conference opener the weekend prior with a 19-16 two overtime loss to Rutgers at the Carrier Dome. Despite the quality work Syracuse coach Doug Marrone has done resurrecting the football program from the grave Greg Robinson placed it in, the Orange are still inferior to the Mountaineers from a talent stand point. That gap did not matter as much last season when Syracuse lost 19-14 at Morgantown as a 13 point underdog.
Quarterbacks Geno Smith (WV) and Ryan Nassib (SRY), who have combined for 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions, both performed horribly in last year's meeting. Nassib completed 5-of-15 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown while Smith threw for 178 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
If Smith throws three picks in tonight's game, Syracuse might be able to keep things close once again, but it seems more likely, given the way Smith has played this season, that West Virginia runs away and hides from the Orange tomorrow night.
