Les Miles' Tigers improved to 7-0 last weekend with a 32-10 non-conference victory against the McNeese State Cowboys.
LSU hardly impressed on offense against the FCS squad, finishing the game with 282 total yards and 19 first downs. The Tigers, which converted just three of their 13 third down opportunities, managed a paltry 103 yards through the air as quarterbacks Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson combined to complete 14-of-22 passes for a 4.7 average.
The rushing attack, which accounted for 179 yards on 41 carries, and the defense saved LSU from a potentially embarrassing situation as the Tigers led just 16-10 at the break. The Cowboys did not score after the half and posted just 219 yardsfor the game.
Auburn, which ranks fourth in the BCS standings and fifth in the AP Poll, also ran its record to 7-0 last Saturday with a 65-43 win over SEC West rival Arkansas. The Tigers led 37-35 at the end of the third quarter, but exploded for four fourth quarter touchdowns to easily cover the 3.5 point spread.
Cam Newton continued his Heisman march in the victory, completing 10-of-14 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 188 yards and three scores on 25 carries.
The Tigers defense, which has given up an average of 29.5 points per game in SEC play this season, saw the Razorbacks amass 30 first downs and 566 total yards. The unit did pick off Arkansas' backup Tyler Wilson twice, but the sophomore passer, who filled in for an injured Ryan Mallett, also tossed four touchdown passes.
LSU has won three in a row and four of the last five in this rivalry series. Miles' Tigers have also covered the spread in the last two meetings, beating Auburn 31-10 last year (-7.5) and 26-21 in 2008 (-2).
