Week 9 College Football Odds

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Week 9 College Football OddsWeek 9 college football odds are out and it looks to follow the crazy trend the football season has taken since week 1. Every year the football campaign takes on its own face unlike any other and to this point the 2007 season is about parody. No one team has dominated the season the way OhioState did during the 2006 regular season and no team can throw its hat onto the field and expect to win versus a perceived weaker opponent. Perhaps in week 1 Michigan thought just that when the Maize and Blue watched little Appalachian State of Boone, NC roll into the big house and stamp a signature on a season that will always be known as the year of the upset.

The BCS will undoubtedly continue to change its look in week 9 with several key BCS ranked teams going head to head. With parody as it is, almost anything can happen. Today we preview five games that have the best chance to re-shape this week’s BCS rankings. We don’t have to wait long either with the Thursday ESPN game pitting BCS No. 2 at BCS 8 Virginia Tech.

No.2 (BCS) Boston College Eagles (7-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) +3 ½ @ No.8 (BCS)Virginia Tech Hokies (6-1 SU, 2-4 ATS), Sportsbook.com , Kickoff 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday, Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Virg, ESPN: Other than LSU, a 7-48 loss, Boston College is by far the best opponent Virginia Tech will face this year. Tech’s early schedule was dotted with weaklings of which the Hokies dispatched with ease. Tech has one impressive win at Clemson but the jury is still out on how good the Tigers really are. Wins over East Carolina, Ohio, William & Mary, North Carolina and Duke aren’t going to get Tech added to any toughest schedules list. BC is a little better in the schedule department but not by much. A big win last time out at Notre Dame isn’t as meaningful in 2007 the way the Irish have struggled. Their most impressive win to date was at the always difficult Bobby Dodd Stadium against Georgia Tech. Both teams are coming off a bye week so no advantage there. This game looks like a toss-up.

No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0 SU, 3-3 ATS) -4 @ No.25 Penn State Nittany Lions (6-2, SU, 4-4 ATS), Sportsbetting.com , Kickoff 8 p.m. ET, Beaver Stadium, State College, Pa, ABC-HD: The buzzards are circling waiting for the Buckeyes to follow suit with previous top-ranked LSU and Southern Cal and stumble. Beaver Stadium will be sold out and rocking for this night game. Both Penn State and OSU were almost caught looking ahead last week as both picked up single digit victories over MichiganState and Indiana respectively. This game has the formula for an upset…Night game + road game + hostile venue +national tv = potential doom.

No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS) -3 vs. No. 21 California Golden Bears (5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS), SBGglobal.com , Kickoff 10 p.m. ET, Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Ariz., FSN: If there is a time for Cal to get its act together following crushing losses to Oregon State and UCLA, its now but it will be difficult to do on the road. ASU Coach Dennis Erickson has the Sun Devils flying high and pounding all comers. This is a great late game for viewers to cool their heels on after a long day on the couch.

No. 5 Oregon Ducks (6-1 SU, 6-1 ATS) -3 vs. No. 12 USC Trojans (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS), BetOnline.com , Kickoff 3 p.m. ET, Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oreg. FSN-HD:The winner of this game is still in the hunt while the loser goes another game down. This is the toughest game on the USC schedule. The Ducks possess perhaps the most balanced offense in the Pac-10 and the nation led by Heisman trophy candidate Dennis Dixon at quarterback. Trojans defense will be better with the return of injured junior linebacker Brian Cushing. Mark Sanchez will again get the start under center but it’s possible John David Booty could reappear if Sanchez struggles. Currently Booty is listed as day-to-day.

No. 7 West Virginia Mountaineers (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) -6 @ Rutgers (5-2 SU, 3-2-1 ATS), BetUS.com , Kickoff Noon ET, Rutgers Stadium, Piscataway, N.J., ESPN: Rutgers seems to have righted its ship after losing back-to-back games to Maryland and Cincinnati and has a chance to knock off the second BCS power in as many weeks when the Mounties roll into Piscataway. The good news for the Mountaineers is they got some reprieve from their Sept. 28 loss at South Florida when Rutgers beat USF at Piscataway. The bad news for West Virginia is now they must travel to Piscataway. Viewers should be treated to a rushing clinic with Heisman Trophy candidates Ray Rice of Rutgers and West Virginia’s Pat White and Steve Slaton all in the same game.
