The Al Golden era got off to a rocky start in Miami thanks to Nevin Shapiro and a host of bad player decisions that took
place under the watch of former 'Canes coach Randy Shannon. The off-the-field issues soon became on the field problems as the team labored through a 2-3 start.
Miami appears to have weathered the early storm, though, and now looks like a team capable of finishing strong. The Hurricanes, now 4-3 overall, have recorded back-to-back wins, beating North Carolina 30-24 and previously ranked Georgia Tech 24-7.
Miami's defense was extremely impressive in last weekend's win over the Yellow Jackets as it limited Paul Johnson's squad, which is averaging 38.4 points per game on the season, to 14 first downs and 211 total yards.
The 'Canes task this evening will not be as difficult with the 4-3 Cavaliers standing opposite them on the gridiron. Virginia, a team that ranks 80th in scoring offense (24.9ppg) and 41st in scoring defense (23ppga), has hardly distinguished itself against top shelf competition.
The Cavaliers four wins came against William & Mary, Indiana, Idaho, and Georgia Tech. Combined those teams are just 12-19 and that includes William & Mary's 4-4 mark against mostly FCS opposition. Virginia's three losses came against UNC, Southern Miss, and NC State, which are a combined 15-7 on the season.
Miami, especially considering its play of late, falls into the last group of teams, the group that defeated Virginia by an average of 10.3 points per game. The Hurricanes will hang another loss on the Cavaliers tonight and it would be surprising if its by fewer than 14 points.
