The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and Central Florida Knights, two goliaths of Conference USA’s Eastern Division will battle in a Sunday night affair to be televised by ESPN at 8 p.m. ET from Carlisle-Faulkner Field in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Oddsmakers at online wagering leader Sportsbook.com have tabbed USM a -3 ½ point favorite on a side bet with a money line price of -150. UCF is getting +130 ml juice as a road underdog. The game total has been set at 58 ½ points.
A USM victory would give it control of the East Division. East Carolina and Memphis also enter the week with one loss, but USM already has beaten the Pirates and it hosts the Tigers on Nov. 10.
A win by UCF would keep the Knights within striking distance, but the Pirates would be in the driver's seat, because of their win over UCF three weeks ago.
UCF and USM mirror one another on offense, with both wanting to establish a power running game. Both have the backs to do that, with UCF (4-3, 2-1 C-USA) featuring Kevin Smith and the Golden Eagles Damion Fletcher.
USM coach Jeff Bower said Saturday that senior Stephen Reaves would start at quarterback for a third consecutive game, while senior Jeremy Young could play if the situation dictated. Young, who had made 18 straight starts, has been sidelined since sustaining a high ankle sprain at Boise State on Sept. 27.
