Auburn at Ole Miss 2010 College Football Predictions

by Reno Gold on Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Auburn at Ole Miss 2010 College Football Predictions: The 8-0 Auburn Tigers, the new No.1 team in this week's Bowl Championship Series rankings, are on the road Saturday going to Oxford, Miss. to take on the 3-4 Rebels of Ole Miss (6 PM, ESPN2). Auburn is coming off a 24-17 win over previously undefeated LSU last Saturday, as it continues its drive toward the SEC championship game. Mississippi, meanwhile, allowed almost 200 rushing yards last week in losing 38-24 to Arkansas.

Auburn at Ole Miss 2010 College Football PredictionsAs of Saturday morning, Sportsbook.com is listing the Tigers as 7-chalk road favorites for Saturday's game over the Rebel Black Bears.

It will be the job of the Rebel Black Bears to deal with the newest rage in college football, Auburn junior quarterback Cam Newton. The number one Heisman Trophy candidate Newton leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in rushing, averaging 134.6 yards per game and has the nation-best 14 rushing touchdowns. Newton is also effective through the air, ranked third nationally in passing efficiency (172.08).

Whats bad for Ole Miss is they allow lots of points, allowing the most (32 ppg) in the league. Their overall defensive ranks 10 out of 12 in the SEC allowing over 370 yards per game.  What all this adds up to is what should be a big win for Auburn. However, Auburn's defense will have to contend with an Ole Miss team thats seems to be getting it together after a rocky start, with losses to Jacksonville State, an FCA program out of the Ohio Valley Conference and traditional SEC weakling Vanderbilt.

Ole Miss is ranked third in the SEC in rushing offense (211.1), fifth in total offense (410.3) and sixth in scoring offense (31.4). The Rebels have allowed the fewest sacks in the league, giving up just seven all season. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is a dual threat,
ranking second on the team with 400 yards rushing and averaging 180.0 yards passing per game. Markeith Summers turned in his second career 100-yard receiving game against the Razorbacks with three catches for 104 yards and two TDs. Brandon Bolden currently ranks seventh in the SEC averaging 79.9 yards per game.

Last week, teams ranked in the AP Top 25 went 13-2 straight up vs. unranked teams, and 11-4 vs. the Bodog.com pointspreads. So on the season, ranked teams are now 117-16 SU and 66-56 vs. the numbers when playing unranked teams.

Also last week, in the four games that matched two ranked teams, the higher-ranked squads went 3-1 both SU and ATS vs. their lower-ranked opponents. On the season, higher-ranked teams are now 18-9 straight up and 15-12 vs. the numbers when playing lower-ranked opponents.

Reno Gold's picks: Honestly, I had to think about this one for awhile. One thing Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt does very well is motivate his teams when they are big underdogs. Today's game has the appearance of a trap for Auburn. While Ole Miss gets little respect, they are playing better football. Masoli seems to have a good grasp of the offense and is causing opposing defenses some problems. If the line was double-digit I might have to go the other way but I'll take the Tigers by a touchdown (-7) in this one.
